What have you done to your DEFENDER today?

I retimed and readvanced my hybrid TDI. I have noticed a little bit of white smoke recently and I haven't touched the timing belt since I built the motor last year. I'm assuming it had a slight amount of stretch and settling since the motor was entirely new.

Gave it a little bit more clackiness and the power is back on track.

Today I seemingly opened Pandora’s box on my 110. I’ve been having issues with poor heat and poor airflow from the heater. I had no air flow on the driver’s floor vent and cool air on the passenger floor vent. I went ahead and bought a bigger Allisport heater core to install hoping that would fix the inadequate heat. When I pulled the heater box I found that whoever installed the ac kit failed to relocate the hood release which put the whole unit too far to the passenger side. This means the floor vent ducts in the ac unit do not line up with the dash holes.

I’m going to remove the whole ac unit to make sure my heating is functioning properly before I address this. If I’m lucky, I’ll be able to bend the ac lines where they go into the bulkhead enough to slide the dash over a couple of inches. If not, I’ll probably have to patch the bulkhead and drill a new hole for the lines.

Not how I planned on this going 🙃

Man! Don’t I know how this goes! horrible alignment on mine, no heat through AC. Also horrible sealing of unit to lower dash which meant it was spilling out behind the dash— I couldn’t feel anything more than a baby’s whisper coming out. While it was out, its just a few more screws to get out the lower dash so you can remove its top and vacuum it out and clean it up. Just replaced the flap foam last night…. Then you can also expose the main wiring from the bulkhead…. and see what other mischief and shoddy work POs have done…

my Project Creep is in full project RUN right now. Totally out of control… but when is the next time I’m gonna have all this crap out, right?

For some god forsaken reason aka it’s only 12deg this morning, the heater fan quit today. Still went out for the first drive since I got back from another SC road trip. I’ll deal with the fan later.

I had mine fill with water and freeze when I lived in NYC because the drain on the duct was clogged with mud. It just blew the fuse.

I have a similar story. Bought a 1996 F-150 from a cop who bought it from a crackhead that he knew. He told me that the heat was weak and in the first winter I realized that it was really weak in the New Jersey New York area. Went on like this for 2 years or so just driving around with hat and gloves on.

While on drill one weekend with the national guard We were taking apart the dash to try and see if we can find out why the heat was not working well.

Standing outside the truck and looking in we were baffled We couldn't find any issue. Until The sunlight reflected off of something shiny in the bottom of the plenum box that mixes the cold and hot air in the dash.

You couldn't see it from any other position and I had to get on my back and reach my arm up inside the plenum to fish it out.

It was a crack pipe.

A crack pipe with crack in it. And the way it was sitting inside of the plenum box it was jamming the door from keeping it from fully closing therefore I never got full heat.

On these square body f-150s up on the dash there were slots for the defroster but no grill or anything to keep shit from falling down it. I guess the crackhead who the cop bought it from had put a crack pipe on the dash and it rolled into the defroster and fell down into the plenum.

Thank God I was never pulled over or had a drug sniffing dog or something cuz they would never believe that story.

Fitted the pickup tailgate mat to the bulkhead between the seats. Noise is 20-30% reduced specially going 70-75 on the interstate. Once I trim it and fully install it it will make a big difference in the cabin for sure. This thing is super thick and about 20-23lbs heavy. Will take pictures when done. It does add a finishing sort of touch to the cabin of the Tithonus.
Next after this will be the rear area with a similar mat for the floor and other side of the bulkhead.

Got a bit further on the dash wiring.

Started putting a few things back together on the right side.

Just an hour-or two each day.
Every couple of days I start it and wiggle wires to make sure it's all still connected and working

Was gonna wire the seats heat circuit with the Carling switches on the Dash console but in the interest of simplicity and keeping my sanity I decided those switches and the relay will go on the Cubby Box as the last thing I do.

Face vents are working!!

Boy I wish that all metal dash from South Africa would have been done.
Sad about the company owner but I sure would want one to make life a whole lot easier wiring wise!
Running wires, looming, taping, terminating and fishing them thru and behind stuff is exausting.

Have been driving it to work daily for the past two weeks. Getting used to the sitting position and pedals. Will definitely drain the transmission oil and add some Pennzoil Synchromesh for a month or so. Fluids will be done this weekend to start keeping a record for maintenance intervals. The OM617 swap is definitely working, albeit loud. lol

Led lights and housings from DNW look great after some work. One’s a backup, one’s gonna be a fog light? Pretty bright, but I’ll get a better idea when i take my bike rack off.

I also finally found a clean way to mount the cross bar on my 110 crew cage

Installed the MOD door cards today. Had to trim a bit and remold. Looks like depending on the VM on duty the holes were drilled to match or new ones were added. I think they add character to the doors.
