What have you done to your DEFENDER today?

I drove my Elise though winters with snow tires. Haha.

Wow! Must have been a hoot.
Honestly, she was an awesome snow car. With the weight on the back and alpin snow tires she even made it up a hill in an ice storm. The looks I got were interesting to say the least. There are a number of people around here who use 911 w/ AWD as their winter vehicles, and at least one with a RWD 911, all running snows.

You ever look up and realize you're playing a rich man's sport and think, "Maybe you can't afford this hobby..."

I have.

Twice actually - once while I was billfishing and the second time about 3 minutes ago.

Ha. Only when I thought about buying a CGT (that would have been a great investment, but it was a stretch moneywise and I was not sure I could do the servicing).

Then again I bargain shop for canned food and heat my house to 55 degrees (up from 50 because my insurance policy says I have to heat to 55) so I like bargains, not necessarily cheap.

As people who have met me have figured out, I like my things “Ron Good” which means functional, not necessarily pretty, so when I saw a video of people towing their immaculate NAS trucks to vineyard rovers events on trailers behind fancy diesel pickups I laughed a bit. I always liked rover people (over say Ferrari people or corvette people) because if you show up in an event with a beat up high miles old rover held together with bailing wire and duck tape that is respected as much as an immaculate vehicle. Porsche people are largely the same (although they have their own issues and it has gotten a lot worse with the run up in values — see driving the 964 in winter above).

I wish the market for collector cars would get on with it and crash so everyone can go back to enjoying them and it is less of a rich man’s sport.

Totally agree.

Thanks to a number of factors (Singer and BaT come to mind), air-cooled Porsches are now unobtainable, but I do consider myself fortunate to have a 2002 WRX. It is valued the same as 964s were a decade ago - and on the verge (at least before interest rates shot up) of also becoming no fun because it'll soon be "worth" too much. A set of those Cup wheels I put Hakkas on and rattle-canned black are now "worth" the price of a week's vacation rental.

I've never seen blue water or done cocaine - but I sure have squandered a lot of paychecks on petroleum-based miscellany, and of that, disproportionately "Rover."

I installed the front JATE rings using the M10 bolts I got free shipped from Amazon global.

I am also looking for someone to make this fairlead an aluminium hawse. I have a giant large synthetic master pull line I bought back at the dawn of time. Any ideas? It’s not a standard size by any means I don’t think. It’s huge. Happy to pay a lot for one. Anyone have a mill and a piece of aluminium and want to try?

Finished up installing the cage and Exmoor drain channel kit. Next up will be welding tabs for the tailgate.

I did add a Kicker ATV (waterproof) soundbar. It's surprisingly robust at 16 lbs and secure on the center hoop - will be concealed when the canvas goes on. Remote mounts to the dash dock, so control is right at my fingertips. Will have a better idea of sound quality then, too - but initial impressions are favorable, as it is a lot better than a small bluetooth speaker.

I looked up the price of that sound bar, it better sound good!

I got a very short break from work so I went to the gravel, filled the winch with oil (for anyone else with a fairey PTO winch, a B-style 13mm wrench fits on the external square plug and if you pull the vent on top you can fill from it and use the square plug as a level plug …. Yes some oil made it to the gravel). It was a head scratcher, until I came up with the procedure.

I also topped up the sals. My plugged vent hope is gone as she needed the better part of a quart of oil over a couple hundred miles so I threw in some lucas stabilizer too.

Then I attacked some of the rusted bolts that mount the cage through the rear crossmember so I can patch the crossmember, but got distracted when the piece I needed for my seat arrived from @JimC (thank you) and inventoried my rear bumpers.

How do I fit one off a NAS90 on a ROW110? Looks like just extend the mounts to the frame.

Oh, and I managed to not find the large washers for them I bought 10 plus years ago ….

Drove mine back to NY from Maryland loaded with Wolf wheels and some trunks for storage, In the darn heat yesterday I was averaging 77mph on the turnpike and still managed to get 26.2mpg. I need to get the pump dialed in and recheck valve lash. Front main seal leak didn’t bleed too much but overall I’m ok with how she’s running now with the new Holset turbo and the exhaust all buttoned up. An inter cooler is in the works just because. Once I swap the transfer case for the 1.4 unit I’m sure it’ll be near quiet and better mileage. The OM617 seems to just enjoy 5th gear from 35mph to 75

Never had a problem driving my old VW beetles in the ice and snow with winter tires. Heck, I even drove a Ghia in the winter with all season tires and had no issues. Then again, I wasn’t doing 100mph either. 😝

I got Elon the 110 (she is from Africa but white hence the name) back from the shop getting her Salisbury pinion flange installed. Then I installed my $14 third brake light, consistent with my interior LED dome light (harbor freight freebie), put the middle part of the Wright offroad mat in (the pedal stop was catching so I taped the mat down) and removed the rear mudflaps and whacked the crossmember to free the rust. Need to do the seatbox and swap in some nicer seats, but it is hot outside and I only got about 60 minutes away from work, work. I am going to probably pull her in and do the bulkhead when it cools down and I am saving the bulkhead piece for then.

So I installed the seatbox mat from wright offroad exmoor. I wish not wish that task on my worst enemy. It is so hard to cut and the guide marks are useless (I checked before cutting thankfully). I am so tired I did not take pics. But it looks great. I also installed some 97 SW front seats I have been hoarding for eons and put the old stained badger covers on them so she still looks like crap. 🤣

I also ordered a bunch of parts from Zach (or Zack I don’t actually know) and my stainless door top studs arrived from AB.

Who thinks I can do the tub cappings without removing the roof? I think I might be able to with the aid of a Jack and some jackassery.
