The Very Best Thread

I have willis and Geiger stuff that’s decades old. The close I have found is mountain khakis. That’s basically all I wear for pants. When they get worn they become work pants.

Love me a good whistle as much as a decent pair of utility pants when in the brush with the dogs. I'm a carhartt double knee fan forever but these Mountain Khakis Alpine Utility pants are the kicker with class. They also make a feild pant that holds up over time with chainsaw in hand.

Good call Kev - I wear a pair of MK pants every day.

I wish I could echo the MK love, but every pair I owned back in the mid-2000s quickly fell apart.

I am a Prana Stretch Zion guy now, pants and shorts. Super durable, more comfortable than my old MKs, and have a useful pocket on the left hip. You can wear them with a belt or without.

This is my favorite clothing I own. Period. I wanted to put them on this thread, but all the Rolex posts discouraged me. You should have a pair...its on my 100 things I can't do without list.
I know I should. I was green with envy watchin Chris sport a pair on the last evening of the trip to AZ.

What if I wear them with a rolex ... because I do :)

I actually prefer the MK flannel lined pants and the unlined bib overalls (I prefer the walls to carhartt but I have both).

Yes! Great for hiking! Super comfortable, and I find them warm enough except in the coldest temps < 38 or so.

I feel that this might be my last post on this forum, surely the Admins are going to kick my ass off for this...and to my credit, I did try to bite my tongue, but I failed.

The Rolex watch is not the VERY BEST watch. It might be a pretty piece of jewelry, but the best watch? Come on...yall don't really believe that do you? At its best, it can tell time; and look great doing it.

If you want to stay true to the intention of this thread, the best watch is a G-Shock Master of G Series. Not only does it tell time, it sets the time by itself using the atomic clock. It charges the battery using solar, and it can sit in hibernation mode for almost 2 years before needing a charge. It has a compass. It has a thermometer. It has a barometer. An LED back light. Water resistant to 200m. And on and on and on...

All of which is totally immaterial to me. Especially the thermometer. One aspect of a Rolex is it is self winding and simple in what it does - in my case provide the time in two time zones.

I am with you, partially.
A $40 Timex is the single most-useful watch I have and ever had in my life.
But we (collectively here) are not known for only making practical choices.

The Rolex Submariner is one of the few watches that look good with any outfit, from summer shorts and t-shirt, to a wetsuit, to a tuxedo. As much as I respect the Timex for its indestructability, it does not pair with everything like the Sub.

I will also submit that I can't remember anything about past Timex watches that I've owned, but I can tell you exactly where I bought my Rolex and every major life event that it's been here for.

As far as the best watch, a Rolex sport model can run reliably and accurately for sometimes decades without servicing (they say you should do it every 5 years but I think that’s nuts). Patek or whatever is going to be “nicer” and a G-shock may take more abuse, but a Rolex is going to take a beating and keep functioning while looking ok with pretty much everything from a suit to overalls.

And I do also like my $30 timex, but it ticks and that bothers me.

Mine is 36 years old and serviced 3 times. It tells me when necessary by really loosing time. The Geneva folks do make it run / look nice though.

My TAG ticks louder than the Timex :)
Actually one of my favorite watching that I have seen in person is my friend and neighbor’s quartz TAG. He got it from his father when he was young and he has worn in every day since (35 years?). The interesting part is that he is in construction/remodeling/rebuilding old cars (has had rovers, but really a porsche guy primarily). It looks like it has been through WW3. The bezel is almost entirely worn away. I need to get a picture next time I see him.

For you grill guys get a hold of some extruded coconut charcoal. Long burn for low and slow but you can get it really hot if want to do steaks. Great for komodo style cookers. I can easily go 18hours without adding any bricks. Not much smoke so when you add your target wood you’re not competing with the coal for flavor. Takes a bit to get it started but one it is going it will burn all night long
