If you grill, smoke, or BBQ...this is absolutely the BEST tool. Thermoworks' ThermapenView attachment 17683
I was going to make the same suggestion. I love my Thermapens. Even though they only do one thing, they do it so much better than any other cooking thermometer I have used. Very fast and accurate. I have a few of them all over my kitchen.

I was impressed with Thermoworks enough that after going through a bunch of crap cheap amazon wireless BBQ thermometers I stepped up and got some of their wireless units, the WiFi Signals and Billows control fan, and the Bluetooth Smoke. I use these all the time for smoking (as a south Texan I smoke bbq A LOT), deep frying, sous vide, candy making, and baking, I like using the app to track cooking temp/time data for absolutely no reason.

While there are def sleeker, more featured rich options out there all of the Thermoworks thermometers I use work and feel like a commercial-grade product (although they are for the most part consumer-grade) and as long as I've had them they have always just worked, no issues, which is why I like to recommend them because I think they are 'the very best'

How about good, but not too expensive 12v inverters? What have you got? I imagine one could easily spend $500 or more on something fantastic, but what if I want to be around $100?

It depends on what you want to power and how much power. I have been using APC back up ups bricks that you usally find at the dump as the batteries have died. Take out the old small batt and fit a set of jumps leads to it and you have good clean power.

I remove the power cord, and disable the powers out buzzer (it will drive you nuts). During our 81 hour black out I use my 750 ups with my camper battery, to keep modern, tv and charging going.

How about the best kitchen knife for general chopping and slicing...

I don’t know about what the very best is, but I’ve had my Global chef’s knife since 2001. I saved my money and did fake chores around the house to be able to buy one when I was in the sixth grade. It definitely doesn’t have the correct ultra sharp Japanese grind anymore, but is still a great knife after many sharpenings

So old battery leads to truck battery leads? These old Trip Lites and APC are disposable anymore as you stated so looking at options.

Lots of great stuff in this thread.

The Weber Kettle should be mentioned, I have several and they are hands down the best. I have done everything short of baking a cake with mine. I have extreme disdain for pellet cookers, lazy persons grill just use the oven

My favorite pants are the non washed double front Carhartts, a mans pants. USA made, durable inexpensive and haven't changed in over a decade

Here's one I lent to nextdoor lady so she could keep her modem running for a couple of days. Dump find. I just connected a set of old battery charger leads to it, battery charger was also a dump find.

Featuring knives, I have this one that I absolutely love. It seems to stay sharp much longer than any other the other general chef's knives that I have too. Full disclosure, this used to be my little brother and sister's company but they sold it about 2 years ago to the current owners. I don't think the quality has faltered however.

This is great advice, there are 2 in my parent's basement that are just collecting dust due to dead batteries...

My go-to for answers on anything battery/solar/inverter-related: https://www.mobile-solarpower.com/inverters.html Beware of the youtube rabbit-hole

I have a Giandel and while it's not The Best, I don't see how it could be any better for what I need it to do.

I went through years of various versions of the various "good" brands of travel mugs. This is the one that works.
  • Actually keeps the fluid hot.
  • Actually seals.
  • Actually allows you to drink like a human being without dripping all over yourself when you use the push button lid.
  • Actual metal construction.
I threw away all my others.

The weber kettle is a solid choice. You know they got it right when the design remains essentially unchanged for 60+ years. Sounds a lot like another product that brings us all together on this board.

I also agree with you on the Carhartt double knee pants. No other work pant comes close to their durability.
I have recently been wearing Kuhl Revolvr pants and they are pretty awesome. Another American brand.

I like to drink coffee while booting up for skiing. My criteria was to be able to easily fill the container with home brew, fit in my boot bag, easy to drink lid, stainless steel construction, dishwasher safe, hot when arriving/drinking, and NOT LEAK in transit. Some may scoff yet this one actually works:

On the topic of "travel" mugs, the vacuum insulated ones are useless to me because keeping coffee at a temperature too hot to drink, cant be drank.

I like to leave the house in the morning with a cup that I can drink on my commute; for that there is only one viable option ("the best"):

The 16oz KeepCup in glass/cork (do not buy the plastic/rubber version).

This allows a cup of hot coffee made fresh when leaving the house to be consumed over the following ~40 minutes at a normal, reasonable pace and temperature.

Do not make the same mistake I did of buying the 12oz version because its "enough" - it is of chodelike proportions and not useful in a car's cupholder.

16oz here:
