Harry didn't stop talking for 25 mins yet I'm still not sure what his main beefs are. Sounds like the Gren is more truck than SUV, which is what I thought it's supposed to be. Harry don't play dat?

Watched his “Garage” channel review where he judged it on the same criteria any city car would, which obviously misses the point. Expected his “Farm” channel review to be more relevant but it was just more of the same whining about how the truck isn’t a car.

RE: Lexus GX 550 - A little more palatable to my eye than previous versions but it does look like a Bronco humped a 4Runner.
Haven’t seen the base yet, just the Overtrail. I’ll be interested in what the base looks like as the Overtrail looks more like the current Prado mixed with the standard TRD Taco/FJ juice.

I find the front end more palatable than the current Lexus GX460. The pricing will be a lot more palatable as well as their options packages/models. There wasn’t much you could do to a GX previously when buying new and the price didn’t stray astronomically from the base price like a Grenadier or Jeep build. Toyota’s options packages I think are better thought out from years of experience with sales and manufacturing.

The key “option” on current GX460 is “luxury” which adds like $10k or so depending on what’s added as options when you do (stereo, which trim offroad or sport). Most all of the GX460 you see are premium which are a bit over $60k. My supposition is that GX550 is going to be a lot more like LX600 where there is a much bigger spread in pricing between grades (although no one in their right mind would buy the $130k ultra luxury LX600 with the designer to be driven by a driver seats in the second row).

I tried to order a base LX600 (5 seats, no fancy suspension) and was told lexus made just a handful so impossible to get. I do think LX600 will get the trail whatever package as Toyota sells offroad LC300 elsewhere. Should see it 2024 if not then 2025. I also think the LX600 gets the hybrid drivetrain from the sequoia.

I’ll be keeping my eye out for the new Land Cruiser if I’m in the market when it drops. I’m not touching the grenadier till I know they’ve made it and are here to stay with the support.

IDK, the GX does look like a great vehicle, and likely the new LC will too. But they don't seem like off-roaders to me. Just having conservative fun at an old school MAR would rip them apart. What am I missing?

I understand that the reason for a higher rear window line is due to new safety requirements (NCAP, etc.), however, why not bring the rear glass down to match the 1st and 2nd row window line, but have still have a protective structure behind that lower portion of the glass for a few inches. From the inside you have the protection needed (I guess) and from the outside there is a consistent window line, at least visually. It is this visual feature that makes all of these vehicles look the same. A Bronco does not look like a Bronco due to this single visual feature (IMO). Or, an alternative and cheaper solution is to black out this area to make a consistent window line. I think Ineos did a good job dealing with this area.

If you want to offroad you put on a front bumper, cut off the running boards, and do the usual lift and tires.

They look like they would suck offroad, but they are a very popular platform in the overlanding crowd these days and seem to be quite capable.

Under the skin they are effectively a V8 4runner with KDSS (but no rear locker option) and most all of the Land Cruiser prado stuff fits on them.

The major selling point seems to be that they just don’t die. Overland people like them because V8, tend to be better cared for than 4Runners, and are less expensive used that 4Runners.

The easy button for offroad is a rubicon wrangler, especially now you can get them with 35in (maybe 37in) tires and lockers, sliders, winch bumper etc. Toyota is headed that way with trailhunter taco etc.

Mine is staying stock, of course.

Trim the front and rear bumpers, remove the running boards and plastic mud flaps, slap some MTs on it and it performs exactly like a DI/DII in stock form. The added benefit is that it is reliable and doesn’t take much to keep it running. Toyota parts availability and prices.

As for off-road upgrades you can use anything for FJ/4Runner and some Taco stuff. Extremely capable vehicles with lots of potential paired with superior reliability.

The GX wasn’t marketed as an off-roader, but it is the exact same thing as the Prado with a better power plant. Complaints from those who didn’t buy them was that they’re sluggish. I have never been in any situation where I’ve said I wish I had more power and that includes towing. My only regret with ownership was not buying one sooner and still being obsessed with Discoveries.

Ya, I was trying to relive my youth with a 95 LWB as a DD SUV, but I got fed up with all the work needed so I bought the GX. After my 100% positive experience with my tacoma (7 plus years, zero problems other than needing to add a turn on the screw that holds on the rear view mirror) I love Toyota products. I keep the rovers to play with (when I can), but if you said drive to Alaska I am taking a Toyota.

Oh and ventilated seats and great AC on the GX.

I did not know the GX lived within the Prado/LC aftermarket ecosystem. And looking at all that plastic I certainly did not expect anything short of a butchered solution. I’m sort of Toyota illiterate. That said, somehow the Grenadier’s absence of features is appealing to me, even though I have to pay for it (?).

Yes to this. I spent gobs of time making every factory system work on my low-mileage, rust-free 95 LWB, only to fear ever taking it off-road. I need to do a little cleaning then BAT’s my uncle…

Don’t rock crawl my ‘94 LWB yet still enjoy some adventure time with it. Hannibal’s Trail France to Italy. August 2015. Now it mostly sees local ski area trails - bottom pic. Just brings a smile every time I drive it.

Check out GXOR to see what people are doing to them. Lots of varied styles of builds. Some look goofy, but that’s the same with every make in the end.

Wife gave me the go ahead to make this the next family hauler for a couple of years and then it’s all mine. Trying to decide between Eldoret blue/white roof and Sela green/white roof. I’m worried that the blue is too close to my Defender‘s Marine Blue. Also worried the green is too dark and doesn’t pop. Anyone who did the test drives care to weigh in?

I was choosing between these colors too but ended up with Magic Mushroom.
They all look good.
Shale Blue isn't bad too.

Same, MM for me too. The E-Blue is not like any LR color, but I felt it was too dark in person so I passed.
