GM 292 Straight 6 - Yet another conversion

^ Nothing wrong at all about going EFI. Hot and cold starts are immediate and fuel metering is excellent. Sure, it's an old platform but it's inexpensive, powerful and brutally reliable. Sure, someone can fit a newer engine with the latest bells and whistles but the cost is going to drive many away from that alternative. Let's face facts here, many owners of Land Rovers are checkbook mechanics. They have little or no skills to repair and maintain their trucks and have to pay someone else to keep it running. It's all about an image for them. Adding a modern engine to their truck just pushes that cost of ownership higher. I'd take this conversion over a diesel any day of the week. It's all about an inexpensive upgrade that even modestly provisioned owners can take on an accomplish without going to a 'pro'. When you consider the cost of a TDi or LR V8 replacement this L6 really shines.

You continue to be the most ardent diesel hater I know.
See you next week.

Fuel metering is rarely excellent on wet runner inline 6 engines. Port injection would be the only way to go. New version hopefully does that

I don't 'hate' a diesel. After getting stinky skank oil all over my hiking boots at Roberts years ago I just see better alternatives. If I were running the China/Pakistan border then I'd switch my perspective to something that could operate on shit diesel fuel in such a remote location. If there was middle ground between the small 4 bangers and the massive V8's found in the diesel pickups I'd be interested too. A compact diesel V8 or V6, as found in some of the newest vehicles, would be interesting but the cost is unreasonable for most folks, including me.

i understand the appeal of the packaging and power, i just am not sure about doing it with heavy old iron.

the gm LTG engine far more compelling as an easy to fit option.

While I like the LTG, it is not an "easy to fit" option nor is it a "cheap to fit" option. The whole LTG engine/electronics setup is over $10k alone. It cannot be compared to this. At this point in time and LS swap is easier and cheaper than a LTG.

Get off this thread you anonymous troll.
This is not a debate thread asking which engine we should use and it's clear you have no idea whet you're talking about.
The conversion is done, the 292 engine was chosen, and your comments add no value.
Just assume it is a red 110 that you have no interest in.
You should tell us exactly who you are and share you vast engine conversion experience and extensive knowledge IN A DIFFERENT THREAD.

Robert, let me remind you this is a thread in the "General" section of an enthusiast forum and it is certainly open for discussion and perspective.

This is not a "for sale" thread, unless of course it is, in which case it should be moved to the appropriate section and you should post the price of the conversion kit.

Please stop and stick to the subject conversion.

I'll never forget that truck stop repair session on that hot Sept day on the side of 81

Looking forward to doing some 1/4 mile runs on the beach with this thing next week. There are few
substitutes for displacement and @ 4.8 liters this thing has it.

Chill out. Let's keep this thread on topic. This isn't D90.

vintagepatina, I think everyone understands that you're not a fan of this conversion. Time to move on.
