Cummins Repower ISF 2.8 for Defenders

I think more a case of the LR frame takes way to much custom fab to install 1t axles & 4 links. The Jeep is already linked & just needed an off the shelf long arm kit etc... Add to that Ian is a Jeep guy.....

True - but Ian had a lot of fabrication work to get the body to fit on the frame. And I think Buck and Lane used LR frames for their 4 link/big axle setups years ago.

Like you said, Ian is a Jeep guy and human nature is to work with what you know. I think he missed the point of the LR Defender - slight lift, stronger axles shafts and 35's and you pretty capable rig that's not a JK.

I have a new in the box Turner long block 300 and everything else in boxes-ie 300 or so loose parts. Assembling the rest of the engine so I can do a 300 to Cummins side by side size comparison.

Lane's was a Defender frame. It also wasn't hacked to pieces to make it what it was. I almost traded for it with the intent of returning it to a stockish vehicle.

Interesting - ours is replacing a 300 so we will also have the two side-by-side.

Theres no race guys, hoping the conversion works well out of the box. I'm pretty confident that the Cummins will replace the V8 in my truck.
Just have to build up my engine slush fund.

I'm also really interested to see the details as i start planning out next steps for the 90 - an engine transplant is going to be a must have due to the trailer. I'm on the fence between an LS or the R2.8 and i really want to keep a manual transmission in the truck.

Pricing a not released but probably comparable to a LS crate motor but comes fully dressed and ready to run with computer and harness, alt and stuff

I have heard that the pricing will be in the $7K-8K range. I didn't get this from trolling the net--I have another source. I'll be curious to see how accurate that is, but I suspect pretty close. Still no release date in sight that I have heard as it is trying really hard to get CA approval before release. Figure another $2K for tranny and adapter and then the various mounting adapters, hoses (like fuel) and such and I was giving myself about $12K for the various parts to make the swap doing work myself. I think this gives a fairly good costing profile to start with for those considering it... YMMV. Pretty similar to LS. And then, it all goes up from there... I think this is a very good, viable swap option for those wanting a mid power diesel.

With the 300tdi having been out of production for close to 20 years, I wonder how long before parts availability becomes a concern.

this would be perfect if it's close to this.

11 years...

Anyway, I think the read on pricing is light - we are looking at something closer to $19K for conversion parts depending on the starting point. Tdi/Td5 trucks may be able to use the existing radiator/oil cooler & intercooler depending on mounting solutions.

You are probably right given a "pros" perspective and getting things new. But from an enthusiasts perspective making use of used and modified parts (and given that I weld and make stuff) I think it is in the ball park of where one can start. I think that if you have a shop do it (which also predicates that things are new and awesome), you will be hard pressed getting out for under $30k--

I only bring this up to provide a base for starting points as many people are delusional on how much work, time and cost goes into a engine swap when you change formats. I am in the middle of a different swap and holy crap I have seen things escalate price wise. And once you start doing a 1/2 decent job, you keep upgrading parts to make sure you get it right--particularly at the end of projects since you are so well committed.

If someone thinks they can do a swap like this for $10K, they are dead wrong. And if your time (and desire for lack of frustration) is more important than $$, then have a shop due it like yourselves---you won't be disappointed from these better LR shops that are doing swaps nowadays...

The problem is that a 300tdi is going to be a cheaper and easier for LR applications. Until they dry up.

I don't think 300tdis will ever dry up. They were in both the disco and defender and I'm fairly certain they were the exact same. No turbo location differences. Considering you can have a 25 year old factory 300tdi in a little over a year it'll be interesting to see how many people go for this conversion. Will it be a prolific swap or a one-upper swap?

Part of the attraction of the Cummins is the same as the LS stuff. Parts availability. Hopefully they'll include this badge in the kits.
