Bring a Trailer Defender Auction Criticism

Riveted roll cage... what the actual Hell? Bolts don’t even cost that much and are probably easier to install!

Honestly, it seems to me BaT isn’t any different than other venues. From the buy side Buyers must beware. From the sale side the pain can usually be avoided by providing detailed pics, detailed descriptions and be responsive. I admire how you can gain a sense of how your truck is being perceived in a short period of time. I want to try it someday.

JC, I agree, that seller has balls to post up what seems like a classic vin swap’d truck like that. With that said, I’d love to drive that thing.

In some ways, BAT is a bit like a "bespoke" corner store Ebay.....

As it builds a reputation for offering certain vehicle brands/vehicle types, the buyers and trolls congregate like honey bees

this truck didn't hit reserve at 41k in 2019. this is crazy, and i guess the 2 that i now own for less than the cost of this one were a bargain. i simply cannot comprehend how this guy gets 40k+ for the last half dozen that he sold. i wish they had follow up filming to see the buyers remorse, or maybe they love them and drive along to park in the driveway. the descriptions are sketchy, the story is all over the place. im so confused.

It’s an interesting perfect storm. Plenty of social media coverage has nicely fueled an increase of interest. We’ve probably all been approached at the gas station by folks that admire from afar our trucks. Seems like 90% of the time they also mention how crazy prices are. That in itself has kinda self-propelled the popularity, mystique and desire to own. It’s been a fun ride that has been running since about 2009. The next few years will be equally interesting. I have a feel the NAS will do well, the ROWs will be the trucks to have fun hunting for, owning and playing with. Especially with guys like Doug/Trey figuring out the whole R2.8 and beyond thing.

What's funny about this seller is the lack of care he openly demonstrates in getting the trucks ready for sale. There are 9!! carling switches in the dash of this monstrosity - all labeled as either "Work Lights" or "Light Bar". When I asked what they were for he responded with some general "aftermarket lights, interior lights, power windows".

Seller can't even be bothered to spend $40 to get correct rockers for the switches.

My only thoughts on BaT are; I listed an Arkonik '87 110 with 300tdi swap. They insisted on a reserve much lower than I wanted, but I went along with the sale. There were no deleterious comments and things went well with the auction. The bidding ended no where near the reserve. I subsequently sold the truck privately for $26,500 more than the highest bid on Bat.
I recently contacted BaT because I was thinking about selling a literally perfect 12,000 mile '87 5 door. They had no interest in handling the auction.
I have read that they have turned down other seemingly easy sell good 110s/130s.

I wonder if some of this is fueled by folks trying to get their vehicles on the market/sold before a potential economic pullback?

The new users % and value sold % is pretty astounding.

I agree on the percentages being astounding. I'm not sure if it is because we are in NJ but seems like the spend in our household has slowed down a lot because of the events. It would be interesting to see where the buyers are from last month.

Barry, you saved me the trouble of posting this! At least it’s a NAS truck and not some Otokar abomination that was restored in Lebanon by Greek ex-cons.

What being said, I’m pretty confident this was a very crappy 97 a few years ago that was given Kahn bolt-on plastic surgery.

It is a reserve auction. The first line of the description would say 'No Reserve-blah blah blah" if it were a no reserve auction.

No one is going to think much of it for 109 thousand dollars. It’s a rip off at half that price. The fact that everyone with a defender now thinks they have a blue-chip classic is most annoying.
