What have you done to your DEFENDER today?

I had some time to get started on refreshing the front axle in my 110, and this was a case of one step forward, two steps back. While removing the drive flange, one bolt snapped off deep inside the hub, and I can’t see how it is possible to remove the remainder. So now I have a new hub on the way and an even bigger bill for this restoration.

My Allisport failed.

I can't find Sareck but can find Serck Motorsports. https://www.serckgulf.com/automotive_catalogue/index.html on their site does show Defender TD radiators, so they have the basic dimensions. Interestingly, they seem to be part of Unipart, which was the parts division for British Leyland/Austin Rover. Similar to Motorcraft for Ford.

PS my Allisport is no good. So there is an order up to RN for a replacement. I'm so annoyed.
Really disappointed in this. I was planning on replacing my clear plastic expansion tank with their aluminum one with the sight guage. But after this, not so much.

It’s definitely Serck, and only recently did Unipart come into the branding, but they‘ve been owned by then as long as I’ve known them, so at least 20 years. Andrew Durbin, their service manager, is who I worked with. Sercks number is (303) 297-0355. Andrew took the comparison hoot and they sis the work at beginning of Nov if you want to reach out.

I have their expansion tank and power steering. No issues with either, just their shitie radiators. I intentionally didn’t do their sight glass as there are many report on them leaking on ALRO and elsewhere. But doesn’t sound to rampant. If you’re concerned about low level, do a sensor alarm too. Mainly, I try and limit areas of leaking. Their welding on tanks looks fab. I like Franks option above but does have an upper (above water line) input.

It failed "like all aluminum radiators" according to my shop where the cooling fins meet the header tank. So there is a Radiator coming from RN. Next party trick is to see if the Allisport fan set up can be matched to the radiator. There is a plan B and a plan C if it doesn't. That's for next week......

I re-installed the swivel ball and housing, along with a new axle/cv, and just now realized I put the stub axle on upside down from how it was before. Does this matter? I expect it doesn’t, and I really do not want to open that tube of hylomar blue back up if I can help it, but will if it’s the right thing to do.

Great job! I’m sure the purists will have some intel, but if you’ve already torqued up the bolts- my vote is to keep moving to the finish line. You’ll be back in there for a wheel bearing inspection in 2 years if you need to make a change.

Yup, i had same thing happened to me a few years ago; my radiator was a few months out of warranty.
They offered the same inspection and it was $400 to ship the radiator back. Local radiator shops won't touch alum radiators.
So, I wrote off my losses. Then, I spent about 500 to have a local rad shop put in a thicker (full depth) copper radiator.
It cools fine for the most part at 188-190 with viscous fan... except when it's 90C+ ambient everything in the engine bay is heat soaked on the trail.
IN fact, truck was just idling to air tires back up after trail run... and it went to 220F!
I'd be interested in a radiator solution you are happy with.

I was a fan of allisport and even promoted them to friends briefly based on the weld quality. For about 2 months. I’ll never speak highly about them again. 2 months of use till I leaked.
