What have you done to your DEFENDER today?

Personally I'd make my own jumper pipe, the LR ones are absurd money. But we do have PL versions depending on your VIN(they switched in 98, at WA159806) this would be the one
I'm at WA141206, so I think I'm good. THANKS!

Not 100% sure I have the talent to make my own. I've had three brake failures in my life (one on an Oldsmobile where the vacuum system died, and two on this Rover, a cracked caliper on the right side and now this on the left). Fortunately, in all three cases I had good run-off room. I think maybe I can go a while before having another. I'm not even 100% sure I can bleed them well! I mean, I understand the process, it's the execution that concerns me.

Get yourself a brake bleeder buddy. Easy to use and you won’t overextend your brake master in the process.

Thanks. I've used that before. It's the getting all the bubbles out part where I struggle. I think I have it right, but then it's a soft pedal, and I have to do it two or three times...

Its a good time to do some regular scheduled maintenace. Plus deal with some know issues like the leaky windshield washer bottle.
That was the plan until some really crappy weather yesterday and today. It’s been blowing hard plus heavy rain mixed with snow west of Beantown.

Found some more time today to get some work done

IMG_2681.jpeg

Finished installing the other oil cooler line

New glow plugs in

One plug was covered in oil. Not sure if that means anything.

Got two injectors installed before the rain returned.

I've going to have to call in the cavalry.... Massive rot in the exhaust and another manifold gasket has gone. Thought it was getting louder so I'm not surprise.
Given that this unit is only 5-6 years old at most.....perhaps its time to go NRP.

I hear NRP isn't that great from a corrosion standpoint, but that's just what I remember, advise you to do your own research before putting your (considerable) money down for the NRP system..

While we have had to warranty older NRP components, they do pretty well with corrosion resistance. But ultimately you're paying for the lifetime warranty, so no need to worry about longevity

Replaced the brake pipe. Flushed the system and changed the fluid. That's on the credit side.

On the debit side, while I was under there I noticed the hole in the muffler and huge rot in the pipe after the muffler. Yeah, it has seemed loud lately...

Its only gets worse. I knew I bent the drag link, but Steering joints are nasty, torn and rusted.....

I finished a few jobs and had some small setbacks as well.

IMG_2963.jpeg

Got the vacuum pump installed. This was far easier than removing it.

Got the lift pump installed. This was a truly terrible job. I think in retrospect I should have rotated the crank for this job to alleviate some of the pressure when installing. And I also dropped one olive and nut into the engine bay black hole never to be found again. I need to order a replacement.

IMG_2970.jpeg

Finished the glow plugs, rebuilt injectors and new crankcase breather. The new spill rail is on too, but I didn’t realize the it did not include the olive and nut.

If I ever have to do this job again I will just remove the hard lines to the injectors. It’s too much of a nightmare otherwise. Not sure if there’s any other hacks to make this go faster.

Next up is the new power steering pump and lines. Then I should be done under the hood and can start on rebuilding both axles and the brakes.

I’m also starting to get a bit burnt out on this project. I bought it sight unseen in December, and had paid for a fairly involved but ultimately useless pre purchase inspection. I had no idea that every single bit of this truck had been used up. It’s actually impressive just how completely the previous owner was able to take every aspect to end of life simultaneously. It’s turned from a fairly small-scope list of known defects to a nearly full mechanical rebuild. My hope is that after the axle rebuilds I can finally start driving it.

I replaced the power steering pump and lines; another fairly unpleasant job that took 6-ish hours due to space constraints. At this point I just need the few parts to hook up the lift pump and spill rail, bleed the coolant, and I should be good to go under the hood. It will be good to see how she sounds with the rebuilt injectors and new vacuum pump installed. Still burned out, but I am close to a stopping point in this phase of the rolling restoration.

Those are the RTE 1/2" conversion towers, I had Simon send me a bare set and had them galvanized with everything else. They're super nice but you can't run the wheelarch suspension covers with them
Curious, what model Fox shocks did you go with using the RTE conversion?

Started painting over the weekend. Unlike @erover82, my standards are low and they were good enough for me. Will do some wet sanding on them in the next day or two to get used to it. Wasnt super happy about the color initially but once it dried I took the tunnel outside and the color really shows in the daylight, also shows how poorly I applied the paint to the tunnel 🙃
