Tool Deals Thread

Brought to mind the swivel ball to axle bolts. This would allow you to get at them, but as mentioned, at a price.

The more pragmatic amongst us can just get this:

Another tool for that job.

Anyone want some old school wooden screwdrivers for their series truck (or vintage German vehicle like a Porsche 356)?

Picked up these ($20) and a stubby bit holder ($11) and wiha magnetizer demagnetizer ($5). Seemed like deals to me. Not sure where the magnetizer is made, but the screwdrivers are real German and have a full through shaft with a leather cap and the absolutely my favorite thing hex on the shaft to add a wrench.

Gedore cable knife to add to the wood handle collection.

Was $14 shipped. Made in Germany or Italy. But I got the last one at that price.

The NWS has a wood handle one that is the same, but I can’t find it. If you prefer plastic. Hazet has the 2156, and I really want the 2157-3 which is a modern style folding knife. Knipex and Stahlwille have similar ones that come out of the same plant. Could not find deals on them though, 2x or more what the Gedore cost.

The blade is short and then there is a half moon shaped blade. I have been stripping large electrical cable with a knife forever, but now there is a tool for that.

Which one do you like?
I got hosed and bought one for way too much money from snap on, but it isn’t snap on branded. I think they have one now that uses their batteries which is nice if you already have their battery powered tools. Really, any of them will work great.

An under hood light is a total game changer for engine repairs, even in a dealership with white floors and LED lighting throughout.
I've found that the brighter the ceiling or floor, the harder to see engine bay parts in Defenders. Probably different in newer vehicles where you can't see through the bottom or top

I like both brands, but the Stahwille box end has a slight edge over the same end of a snap-on wrench. It’s slightly deeper and seems to just fit better. Maybe personal preference, but I give it an advantage.

Side by Side for reference:

is it weird i prefer my cheap ass wrenches most of the time ? they have box ends that are half this height and i love it.

Cheap wrenches are fine until you strip something. :) I like my cheap tools. This is mainly a hoarding vanity project. The only ones that really got annoying were screwdrivers. I can’t stand cheap screwdrivers anymore.

It’s funny because Stahlwille is the opposite. The open end is thin and the ring end is thicker.

Frank, I want the 90 tooth gearwrench flexy comfort grip though. :) They loaded at $66 for your link. :(

Can someone help with finding a deal on 3/8th and 1/2in cordless impacts? I have dewalt stuff now (I have the quarter drive one with the six point bits for 1/4, 3/8, 1/2 aka zippy zippy and a corded 1/2in). I am willing to switch to Milwaukee too. I think I want hog ring not pin, but I don’t know. Or at least educate me on what to buy? I want a 1/2in that will rip off or break any rusted rover bolt.

Tool orders update (don’t ask, please, I have a serious, serious problem, but at least I don’t have a dozen rovers again, or every rover winch ever made):

Hazet 600lg/13 wrench set got the last one on Amazon global for $252. Thats >$100 more than the Stahlwille 14/17 but they are very long and I want to try Hazet and they go to 24mm whereas the 14/17 Stahlwille goes to 22mm.

Hazet 12in vice grips global $35 last one on prime. Apparently these are crap and the Gedore and Stahlwille are better. I don’t know. But it was huge vice grips for like 1/3 what they cost elsewhere and says Hazet so ....

Hazet battery brush, I am offended by how much I paid $17, but it says made in Germany now they want $42

Some other random crap, but I thought these were interesting and deals. Nupla brass hammer 1.5lbs for $27. If I like it, I will get the 4lbs for $67 too.

Knipex installation pliers on sale for $55 (I spent $8 more to get VDE because well as I noted above I am an idiot and I am collecting Knipex handle types).

Knipex on Amazon.de is MUCH less expensive .. like 40% less so a massive Knipex order makes a lot of sense and I will probably do that down the road, but for these the US ones have 10 and 12 gauge strippers whereas on .de they use european wire sizes. US apparently does not offer spring loaded either. That being said, I did not feel like doing another .de order as I would have maxed the $1000 so I also got some flush cut pliers in ESD (aka zip tie cutters) for $30 because I like the different color handles.

I ordered some more random Gedore wrenches too just so I could see and hold them. And some other stuff (dozens of items in transit now). Still have not crossed $5k ... yet.

PS I have now discovered Japanese tools. I ordered one JIS #2 Vessel megadora screwdriver. Nepros ratchets are apparently amazing and I might get one in 3/8th flexy head.

You should like those circlip pliers. They are in my basket on .de

100 euro for 8 it’s a good deal. Less money than the Knipex and Gedore has two different color handles for internal and external.

You were too slow for the super cheap price. Ill keep an eye out and post up some impacts.

Get cushion gloves not tools. ;)

The comment about cheap tools got me thinking. I was like “well evilfij, are you going to put these fancy tools in your truck to take with you to Rover events?”

As I was oogling the Hazet assistent traveling tool things and and debating between the classic 166 (which fits Gedore sized foam inserts).

And the newer 166C which I think fits Hazet foam inserts

then this popped up, a loaded Hazet tool trolley, @JimC advice

Then I was like I have to draw the line somewhere, maybe I can find one less expensive. This pops up.

I watched a German guy loading it into the back of a hatchback. Well, I thought that was what he was doing, but he was just taking the hatchback apart. I need to learn German. But Amazon.de won’t ship to the US. Yes, it’s Taiwan Gedore red, but the reviews are really good. Sort of the German gearwrench.

Anyway, I gave up and bought this set for $133 off prime.

It’s my new trunk tool kit I guess. It seems like it’s not crap, but for everything in the kit with three 72 tooth comfort grip ratchets ... why not. If I don’t like it, I will give it to @WreckITFrank or my young friend who helps wrench. Gedore red is not that inexpensive, but they have some cheap prices on a few things, this set, and the tool cart with tools along with a few other ones. I may do a youtube review of all the German tools.

If anyone needs some dirt cheap decent SAE wrenches here is a 1/4 to 1in set for $18.

There is a back story, Gedore from the 1960s until 1983 or so made all its wrenches in India, then they got a giant forge in German. Carolus is what became Gedore Red. So these look like left over SAE wrenches branded Carolus, but are what are now sold as Gedore Red. I believe they are made in India, but I can’t confirm that except for the metric wrenches (various sets on Amazon, $95 for 6-32mm inclusive and a lot less for offset or open end combos). Are they Stahlwille? Hazet? Gedore Blue? Of course not. You pay what the set costs for one wrench.

Anyway, it goes in the hoard for review. Then it goes in the Jeep (which has the most oddball assortment of fasteners and makes me hate torx more than rover cage bolts) or suburban or maybe just for a set at the other house. I see no need to upgrade from my collection of USA Craftsman 6 point (to 1 1/2in) and 12 point (not as big and I don’t think I ever use them).
