Tool Deals Thread

Maybe not. :) I know I am probably the only one paying attention to my posts in this thread, but Stahlwille released their new promo items and among them was a 1/2in drive fine tooth set. Mister Worker has it for 199 euro which is 50% off sticker. Out of stock, but you can order it and over 500 euro you get an extra 10% off. So 55% off Stahlwille.

So I bought it and a bunch of other stuff including a full set: PZ1, PZ2, PH1-4, and every slotted they make (goes to 20mm head) of the 3K screwdrivers based off the 8 piece set that was on sale for 77 euro, the big set of ratcheting wrenches, one of the metal tool boxes, and a set of their pliers wrenches (so I will have a Knipex, a Gedore, and the Stahlwille). I also scored a big set of Hazet ratcheting wrenches for $227 on Amazon global. I get the impression the Hazet are the best because they have thinner heads, but I wanted both the 5 piece (I have both 5 pieces) and full set of both since I liked the 5 pieces so much.

Here is a screen shot of the order.

Note I messed up and order the 28 piece 1/2in set with the older ratchet by mistake. :( I emailed them so let’s see how their customer service is. If they don’t change it, I will probably just swap the 1/2 qr ratchet I have into the 28 piece set. It does have more sockets and Stahlwille sockets are stupid expensive.

This is the 28 piece set with the older ratchet and not quick release you probably don’t want:

I am trying to overcome my fear of 110v electrical stuff. So I used the 13 euro Hazet screwdriver set to fix my craftsman’s professional reciprocating saw that I bought 20 years ago and it never worked. The ferrule in white connector was not seated. Woo hoo. New 20 year old saw. I knew I was keeping it for a reason. Hoarding sometimes pays off.

I like the Hazet screwdrivers so I bought a couple sets. The plastic triangular handle complete set in foam (92 euro on .de) Has Ph1-3, PZ1-2, a PH and Slotted Stubby, and a huge selection of slotted and the set of striking cap set (30 something euro on .de).

Here is a porsche pic. I suppose I should use the German tools on the German cars not a Chinese made 20 year old craftsman saw that’s been sitting in a closet.

mister worker emailed me and noted that they made the change to my order to go to the fine tooth qr set. That’s pretty good customer service anywhere to me. I know Europe has a reputation of being less customer service focused than the US, but not true here.

If anyone wants a deal on THE BEST ratcheting wrenches, there is one set left of the Hazet on Amazon global for $227 (my set just shipped) with the socket inserts (the round things on the top corner you can pop them into the wrenches for a very thin ratchet) in the foam. It’s more than gearwrench, but they are the best (I should know). The Hazet are slightly better than the Stahlwille (I have the five piece of both along (~$75 each) with the full set of the Wera ($350 was the best I found) and have the full set of Stahlwille coming too) because the heads are thinner so you can sneak them on more nuts and bolts. The Gedore are the only ones that are completely German, but they are more money, thicker heads, and the reviews are not great.

Anyway, here is a link (as always, no affiliate or benefit to me or anything just sharing a deal or at least a deal in my hoarding mind they sticker at something like $812 and KC sells them at $550):

It seems a lot less crazy when you put it in a box and do a 4 minute tour on Instagram. If anyone does not follow me, just submit a request and I will let you and follow back.

Forgive the fact that the 3/8 and 1/2 drawers are empty, I cleaned all my Williams era Kobalt stuff and it’s still in the house.

Here is a deal on the dewalt 1/2 in high torque impact everyone loves and I have been looking for a deal on for months. The videos and reviews (and dewalt sponsors basically no one so they are legit) is that it is a beast. @WreckITFrank found a deal earlier with the battery, but it just was not as good as I wanted.

$249 for the bare tool (which is what it basically is on Amazon), but you get a free tool with it and the 1/4 in drive XR impact DFC887B is one of the choices. So you get a $139 sticker $80 plus actual price tool (best price I could find was $88) for free.

Best deal I have seen if you are already in the dewalt space ... or course I already spent $100 a couple weeks ago on another new 1/4 in dewalt impact so now I have three and need two, but whatever .... one can ride in the truck and when I bought the new one I went cheap and did not get the one with three speeds so it will be a welcome upgrade. If anyone wants a new, unused 1/4in dewalt impact and wants to come visit me, I will give you a deal you can’t beat on the bare tool.

Anyone have any experience with the aftermarket big 5.0 or 6.0 dewalt batteries? They are like a 1/3 the price of the genuine dewalt ones and reviews seem good enough.

Two deals for under $20:

If anyone is looking for a deal on excellent side cutters, Amazon has a set of Gedore 160mm for $16.

Amazon does not know what it has and is advertising them as red handle, but they are the blue handle nicest ones Gedore makes (KC gets $33 for them) as both the ones I got and another reviewer got show. I actually like them better than the Knipex. I ordered a second pair.

Similar deal to the big Gedore blue 1/2 socket set I have mentioned before, half what they should be.

One more is the Gedore Red hammer and punch/chisel set in foam for $19 (ships in a few days which is what I did when I ordered).

Yes, it is the Gedore red line (which is mostly Taiwan made but still very good) but this one the hammer and chisels/punches are made in Germany. The only difference between this and the $40 regular Gedore hammer is no metal band protector below the head and the punches and chisels appear to be the same as the regular ones they just say red in addition to made in Germany on them. So basically you get $50 worth of tools for $19. The pic shows plastic but it comes in foam.

@evilfij any experience with USAG?

Yep, lots of USAG is re-branded FACOM for a lot lower price, even the roll cabs etc. I’m 100% happy with my FACOM stuff, but I started buying it back when they were one of the few companies selling tools together with storage modules. If you want to try just one FACOM item, get the rotating ratchet. There is a USAG equivalent.

KCTool has a good tool of the day. They have the 90 tooth Hazet 1/4in bit ratchet for $60 (I can send you a 10% off code, but it does not work on tool of the day, but you can use it on other items to get free shipping at $75). It’s 50 euro on .de, but you have to pay shipping so pretty much a wash. Finding Hazet deals outside Amazon global, the primary items that toolid sells, and some thing on Amazon.de is hard. Annoyingly, even though I ordered at 5am, it’s out of stock. But whatever. I don't need it now.

DISCUSSION ON SCREWDRIVERS AND SHIPPING RANT (probably better to skip)

In my obsessive tool deal hoarding, I find that KC has the best prices on single screwdrivers (to fill out sets) and often has very good prices on Wera.

C9012101-357F-4F60-9E4A-59FE06DBEC98.png

So, for example, I bought the full set of Felo wood ones 3.5-12mm slotted, PH1-3, PZ 1-3 (I have so many of the Felo wood it’s not funny at this point for $20 for the set of 5 I just buy a set and leave it in every tool kit I have I like them that much they are my favorites), the full set of Wera stainless steel (bought the big set with all the slotted through 12mm and PH1-3, and bought the smaller set with PZ1-2, and added PZ3), the full set of Wera torx (the entry level line because a set of 12 was like $40 with the 10% off code so I just added T45), and the full set of Wera chiseldrivers minus the torx (that was expensive even buying the 11 piece set—so I do have T20 and T25–to start as it goes all the way through PH4, PZ4, and has some giant slotted and all the giant ones are more than $20). I should have bought the 6 piece torx chisel driver when it was $34 on prime, but I bought the entry level Wera because it was more compressive and a lot less money and I also like to keep different screwdriver handles for different drives so knowing the entry level Wera is torx makes sense to me (obviously can’t do this with posi, PH, slotted, PH/S, and PZ/S, although helpfully Wera square drive are different colors except for some reason SQ2 VDE is red and yellow where as the VDE SQ1 is green and non-VDE SQ1 and SQ2 are different colors). I got bondhus for the ball end hex key drivers so I can keep those handles different as well (they are color coded different — red and yellow — for SAE and metric and the very complete sets were $30 each on prime). Felo and bondhus are somehow affiliated.

For the castle set, well the Wera stainless (inside) and full set of Felo wood (garage) are going there, but I also have the almost full set of Felo Ergonic (I did not buy the stubbies as I have the stubby bit driver) and a full set of Felo black handle Torx.

So with the full sets of Stahlwille 3K and full set of Hazet coming, I am pretty sure I will never be without a proper screwdriver wherever I may be

In other news, Germany is slow to ship heavy things, especially in shipping my Heuer vise. I reached out to the seller and they reached out to DHL and it has been sitting at a DHL facility since 2/28. DHL counts that as 3/2 and its 28 working days to ship it per the response (Google translate is super awesome). The Hazet vise has still not shipped from Amazon.de although they finally bit the bullet snd stuck my Hazet toolbox with tools in a DHL facility.

I had my first damaged in transit order yesterday. My Gedore pliers wrench was supposed to come with two sets of plastic jaw covers. Amazon.de packs stuff like shit (just thrown in a cheap box) and the box and the box for the pliers wrench was damaged and one of the four jaw protectors escaped so I don’t have a spare set. Not that big of a deal, I suppose, but annoying nonetheless.

Back to made in USA.

$37 for a mayhew 60in (yes, 5 feet) alignment pry bar.

I have the five piece set of dominator striking cap ones ($80) — first set was lost in the mail, second set arrived today, and the set of three lady feet ones ($60). I was suitably impressed. Thinking about a 54in regular striking cap one ($110), but the five foot alignment one showed up on sale for $37 which is a no brainer to me for a USA made steel.

I also have a couple of the 17in straight screwdriver striking cap pry bars which are excellent for dealing with those old, giant slotted screws in old houses. ($14 on sale half off).

And ordered a set of brass punches ($34), but have not received them yet.

Somewhat pedestrian, but Milwaukee “the torch” long sawzall blades are on sale for $12 for 5 (55% off) on Amazon. These are the best blades in my experience. With a corded Dewalt (nothing fancy), they will mow through a rover chassis in under 1 minute and they last pretty well. Even when you hit a chassis reinforcement, they slow down, but they keep going.

That’s a great deal. Bought some. Typically prefer the smaller Torch blades but not passing these up... Thanks!

So back to German brands and onto stuff that you knew you were looking for but could not find.

00196B1D-26B2-4E3F-8967-37E13F1359C5.png

If you are like me and most of the stuff you deal with is european, you need stuff like posi, torx, hex, metric, but finding especially posi impact bits is hard outside of individual ones (which are very spendy). A long time ago, I bought a Bosch set, but it was sort of crap and came with some chintzy drill bits — not the good Bosch stuff. I have some good Bosch impact bits which I like, but I could only find PH not PZ.

Well, Gedore sells a set. Yes, it’s $48 (KC asks $92, it does not seem to be on Amazon.de but euro sellers are asking 50 euro and don’t look at what eBay sellers want) and the dewalt US impact set is $30 (I got it at $25), but Gedore’s has torx, posi, hex and it has metric impact 8mm, 10mm, and 13mm nut drivers and the case is much nicer). I have not used it yet, and such bits are really consumables, but it seems typically nice (I doubt it’s German made but who knows).
