Tool Deals Thread

Screw it’s $100. I am adding a Gedore pen to get the free stickers. I have a non-digital one, but it was like $20.

The only thing I have not bought lately is the set of Klein bags of my dreams (all the colors). At this point, the only justification is it’s a deal. I know this has gotten absurd ....
Did someone break into your house and steal all your tools? You’ve been on a spree!

No theft of tools. They are almost all locked away. I did lose my 13mm craftsman six point wrench though. :(

Like many addictions, it’s hard to pinpoint the start. It was probably when I lost my 13mm six point craftsman wrench and went looking for a replacement. But maybe it was when I realized I did not have 6 point chrome metric sockets? Was it when I bought my first Wera set? First Wera screwdrivers? Was it when I realized I did not have six point deep chrome metric sockets? Was it when I bought a 250mm cobra to try to loosen a broken off bolt shaft on the PTO winch in my kitchen?

Anyone who has been to my house in PA knows I am a hoarder and bizarrely cheap, really more of a spendthrift when I comes to certain things — I never go on vacation, I have no family to support, my house I keep at 55 degrees, I eat canned food etc. basically if you did look almost everything but cars, my wrist, the castle and a few odd collections (so my day to day life) I live like someone barely getting by.

Really, it is that I get most of my money year end. I usually buy something to celebrate year end money. I also saved a bunch of money servicing my GT3 myself so that was part of the justification for buying tools specifically. Depending on the year, I give myself a percentage of year end money to spend. I typically end up with a vehicle or fancy watch. Well, I only wear one watch 99% of the time and I have ten vehicles and no space left, so I decided to buy myself tools. I did not set out to buy everything I have bought, but I am enjoying it and don’t plan on stopping until I get everything I want for tools. My theory is I can buy 1000 fancy German screwdriver sets for the price of the watch I was going to buy, or 2000 for the car I was going to buy. That’s a lot more instances of happiness from a purchase and the tools are costing me a small fraction of what I planned to spend on a watch or car. :)

This looks like a super useful tool to have around. Just ordered one.

17in is a couple dollars more. No sense in not getting the set .... or two sets ....

Also back to deals on stuff you did not know you needed until you got them. American made razors in a case that actually works and has old blade disposal at the back. F’in brilliant for $12

I am not sure these are the best of the American line brand razors, but man are they nice. I will research and buy whatever is the best if this is not it as a second set. No more cardboard wrapped chinesium crap and cut fingers unwrapping them (I use a lot of razor blades).

Now if my Stahlwille razor scraper would show up I can dispose of the crap scraper handles too.

I wouldn't describe your tool obsession as "bizarrely cheap". These are some quality tools you are researching deals on.
I never thought of Amazon.de until you mentioned it. I just ordered multiple sets of really small Knipex 74 01 140 pliers to put in my MTB tool kits (Amazon didn't even pull them up on a search).

Bizarrely cheap is about the rest of my life, not the tools. They are spendy even if there are deals. I mean I eat great value canned food and live at 55 degrees for absolutely no rational reason. Just because I am cheap. :)

Smoking deal on a 25ft standard tape with the fractions on it. $7 two thirds off.

I have several from this brand (I like the metric and standard in one, but this is helpful for standard measurements). Can never have too many tapes. Especially the padded ones.

I like it! I try and use the same rationale with the wife...except I say I don't have any other hobbies now (lost my diaphragm) so all my monies go to cars and taking her to places she likes...

$17.74 on Amazon.de v. $28 on Amazon.com for those Knipex and the $17.74 is with VAT so they end up being even less!

So there is a slightly better set of razor blades.

Last one as I have another call now so I have burned my 30 minutes of tool fun.

Does anyone in the US sell a euro style tool cart? Basically something like a Hazet/Beta/Stahlwille/Facom with the deeper drawers for foam inserts in the Hazet size?

Ok, hoarding back on.

I somehow (thanks @WreckITFrank ) got into Klein stuff. If I am honest, I was sort of prejudiced because they are sort of the opposite design of what I like in a screwdriver. I prefer smaller handles that have a form as opposed to round.

That being said, I have come to appreciate them. I think I have bought most of them (I know I know) or at least a variation of most of them and the Wiha clone (not recommended it’s HUGE handle but it does have t20 and t20 which I need for the tacoma as opposed to t10 and t15 for the Kline so it’s the center console screwdriver in taco).

So, onto the deals!

$50 for four multi bits. I wanted a dedicated nut driver, could not find the 5 in 1 I wanted for less than $20 and was not about to spend $28 for the 6 in 1 or $30 for the 7 in 1 magnetic (deals only!), but you get the 14 in 1 ($15), 6 in 1 stubby ($10), 4 in 1 precision ($15) and the 7 in 1 magnetic nut driver which has all the sizes ($30) for $50.

I have all the other ones (I have the 14 in 1 precision rather than the 4 in 1 as well as the precision with the bit box) besides the nut driver, but for an extra $20 for $40 worth of screwdrivers I will toss them in the second electricians kit.

These are really nice for insulated because they give you the long cabinet ones with the slim tips. Yes, one weights about 3 weras ... but they are quality. $40 for four.

I also like the chinesium ratcheting one on sale for $20. I have two of these.

I really dislike the extendable one. Chinesium again, but crap. Just crap. It does have a lot of bits and it’s now a console screwdriver (jeep I think, I basically just dole out screwdrivers like packs of cigarettes). Hard to adjust, bits won’t stay in the holder in the handle etc. did not buy the stubby. I assume it’s also crap.

I do like the 6 in 1 extended reach one on sale for $14. They can work into places the 14 in 1 can’t and serve the same purpose as the four piece insulated I posted above as I got the one with both squares (my one stubby also has both squares) for $16 so that’s in the second kit whereas the four piece slim insulated is in the big kit.

Of course, the regular Klein screwdrivers and nut drivers are nice (set on sale for $50, $100 with nut drivers and other stuff), but I am all about the multi ones and slim insulated ones as that is the advantage to me. If I want a regular screwdriver, I just grab a Felo wood one (they are littered about both houses and garages at this point). In that regard, I also got the 10in shaft giant slotted and the big slotted striking cap one.

I also bought every Klein farkle I thought I might need from the visor light to a hammer to a tape measurer to a pull tape to a couple meters couple knives etc (going to get a fluke when I make up my mind what one I want for car work and which one I want for a clamp on house style).

PS I bought the Lenox 6 in 1 nut driver on sale for $14 as well. It’s half the comparable Klein. Been happy with Lenox. I am waiting on my Lenox pliers wrench which is really cool. Will compare when they are both here. Note only the Lenox and the Klein 7 in 1 have 1/2in. 5 and 6 in one Klein’s, the 7 in 1 ideal etc do not have 1/2in

PPS I bought the mayhew cats paw screwdriver set posted here on sale as well. For the good of the thread I tell myself. My mayhew punches and chisels arrived but National took warehouse posted an incorrect description and picture so the one I got did not have the handle. I was miffed and almost bought the other set when I found the pen I thought I ordered, but decided I am never using that handle so I do have some modicum of self control.

Last deal for the night.

Now I know these are not the top of the line (pun intended) VDE, fish tape puller crimper 9in linesman pliers, but they are $40 plus pliers on Amazon, and the needle nose and side cutters are each $20-25, but for the set of 3 it’s $60. Sort of like the insulated 4 piece screwdriver deal or the four piece multibit driver deal, you save considerable money.

Out of stock (of course) but these things always show up quickly.

I figured I should stop complaining and just try them. I paid $60 for the Knipex linesman pliers (I own two pair the VDE as well as the comfort grip with the fish tape puller and crimper)

I've had a pair of those exact Klein diagonal cutters for years and while not Knipex, they are absolutely good enough and guilt free.

That’s good to know! The main advantage I see to these Kleins over the Knipex for my application other than price is that the handles tell you what pliers they are without seeing the heads so they are nice for stuff that is in a tool bag or pouch as opposed to a when they are laid out in a box. I suppose you could buy a set of Knipex with different handles (one VDE, one comfort grip, one red) or Gedore (no handle, blue, red, comfortgrip) but that seems complicated compared to just having a set.

BTW, if anyone wants a deal on a tool pouch, I can recommend this one with belt for $20. I was shocked at how nice it was for the price. It was one of those rare tool deals I liked so much I bought a second one for the other house.

The Klein $60 set of three pliers shipped so they ended up in stock ASAP.

Somehow Amazon let me order the Knipex forged wire strippers for $46. I paid $62 for the soft grip handles from KC (they are $67 on Amazon). The price difference between the handles is suppose to be like 50 cents. However, now the $46 deal is gone. :( Link in case it comes back.

They are the best IMHO for automotive work, and, if I am honest, they probably are better for house work than the Knipex installation pliers if you don’t need VDE and see anything other than 12 and 14 gauge wire.

Before I go and buy both, does anyone have a view as to whether Klein or Channellock Cable Sheers (9.5in) are better? The Kleins are $29, the Channellock is $23 based on current Amazon sale prices. Same size etc.

I can’t find anything Knipex I want for under $100.

Review of the Mayhew Catspaw Screwdrivers

So I bought the 10 piece set for $57 on sale based on the link here. I found zero reviews on YouTube or anywhere else. I was curious, I do not need anymore screwdrivers. I have only used a PH2 and only briefly so can’t talk about long term wear. Needless to say, I have seen, bought, and used briefly a LOT of high end screwdrivers recently (and will soon being getting a set of Stahlwille and two more sets of Hazet ... and the Gedore striking cap are in my basket on Amazon.de).

Apparently Mayhew used to make these in the US, then France, but these are Taiwan per the fine print on the box. 2 year warranty. They are the “select” line which is entry level.

They come in a nice, but cheap, thin, plastic tray for your tool box. The handles are a rubber, not soft like the Felo Ergonic, and more rubber like than Wera. It’s a trilobe design on the handle (not my preference, but good for getting torque). They feel heavy and appear well made with the striking caps, what appear to be hardened tips, and hexagenal shafts and hex boosters for using a wrench (BTW the Gedore pipe style 6 points are awesome for that on Phillips). Set includes 5 each slotted and Phillips (1-3, and a subby and two lengths of PH2). I would describe them as similar to mechanics tool truck screwdrivers (but not matco, those are made by witte like Stahlwille).

Overall, they are nice, and are about half the price of Wera chiseldrivers (to me, the gold standard of striking cap screwdrivers of those I own as are built like tanks and the heaviest screwdrivers I have used) and the handles appear like they would be more immune to oil etc. The downsides are, no posi, no torx, and they are just not as nice as the German stuff IMHO. They also do not grip like Wera lazertips, but nothing else I have used does. That being said, they seem like good value, the slotted sizes are SAE which does make a difference in my experience, and it’s hard to find striking cap and hex bolster screwdrivers. In conclusion, for greasy land rovers, they may be the ticket if you don’t want to get tool truck brand screwdrivers.
