Spy shot of new Defender

Possibly oranges to apples, but I think high tariffs on Japanese motorcycles by Pres Reagan have been credited for contributing to saving Harley-Davidson.

That is pretty true. But I it was so targeted, and had such a specific mission, that it had a chance. It's certainly good for a competitive U.S. business, but it causes trade wars, limits consumer choice, and new taxes always cause inflation.

Am I the only one growing more and more suspicious of a New Defender being anything like what anyone expects?

Put it this way. We were supposed to have a the New Defender in 2014, or even earlier. The DC100 was first shown to the public in 2011! Then they obviously had delays, bad feedback from fans, and whether one caused the other or not, the extension of the Old Defender's production; then the extension of the release of the New again, to the point now where it is 'supposed' to be out in 2018... or 2019?

At this point in time, most other new cars have a solid concept vehicle to show. The DC100 is all we have, and it is 5-6 years behind schedule for what should have been the release of the production vehicle. At this point in time, most other new cars have spy shots, or leaked reports from people who have driven it, etc...

Personally, I've heard from people in development who, without saying anything that they actually know, have told me that what has been seen is what it will be. We've seen the DC100. But again... that just doesn't make sense for the timeline and for the amount of negative feedback they got.

We've also heard from JLR/Tata, as long as two years ago, that the final designs were approved and work on creating the production model had begun. We even heard that no changes would be made at this point. That was too long ago. The production should have begun already if that were truth.

The only thing that is certain at this point seems to be that LR is keeping an extraordinarily tight lid on what is actually going on. Or... nothing is going on...

Well the production or release of the Velar was very quick. I think starting with the Evoque I think LR released a car a year. This year the Disco and the Velar are coming out.

I am still holding out hope that we see a Defender by the end of this year. More spy shots in the summer. But the US sure as hell will not be getting it the same year as the ROW. Who knows if a 4 door would even be available here.

I still think LR dropped the ball on doing what MB has done with the Gel?ndewagen.

If I was a betting man, I'd say that if you line up all of the JLR's current Rover offerings, squint really hard and try to imagine an average of the lineup...bulbous front end, tapered roof line, small front and rear overhangs... you're probably in the ballpark.

I spoke with someone at Land Rover Buckhead the other weekend when I stopped by to take a look at a D5 they have on the lot... I told them i wasn't in the market for a new car until early next year and i'm curious about the new Defender. They told me that the'll have a lot more to show early next year and that that is all they could say...

not holding my breath.

I seriously doubt the average dealership knows much more than we do at this point. They probably have talking points to respond with, and that's what you heard.

I'm surprised China hadn't reverse engineered a Defender long ago and called it the Rand Rover Refender and sell it online for $15,995. I'd buy one.
