To be honest, the front is less rounded than I was expecting. EU pedestrian regulations and all that.

Not impressed. If this is not still camouflaged, JLR is doomed.

The drivers row to the rear makes sense. I hold out hope that it will have some further design cues that set it apart a bit more, but if you are going to suddenly modernize a 35 year old design, it makes sense.

But the whole front end looks like an afterthought, or just a first draft sketch that they ran out of time to spend on it. Boring.

I hold out hope. But it is waning. I still think the interior innovations and usability as an overlander will be what makes or breaks the gamble.

The port side of this thing makes it clear that shoulder-line trim is more camo.

I'm hoping the bottom edge of the windows is actually down a few inches from where it seems to be with the wrap on. I've never liked the designed bad visibility that a lot of modern cars have. And I'm worried that this vehicle will lose that position that we feel when we drive Defenders and Range Rovers. The early images show a LOT of headroom in the prototypes; as if it is designed to look a certain way, but you actually experience something different. Like sitting in an FJ Cruiser and realizing that Hot Wheels cars would have been terrible to drive in real life.

If that is an undercut on the beltline, I'm out. I hope that is still camo. Rear tow hooks! (for when it gets stuck in puddles) I liked the african wrap, but this one is definitely a no.

Right, but someone, someday, has to engineer a way out of it. I'm just hoping there's another inch or so of glass along the bottom there.

I still can't see it really as a Defender, but I'm keeping my hopes up. It think my main problem with it is still the fact that it lacks the function design and absolutely unmistakable Defender profile. I'm going to miss alpine windows and such...

But, as a new model in the LR lineup, I can say that it is growing on me. I think they really are going to have to prove that it can stand up to an off road beating, and it has to have some pretty great interior overlanding type of utility before I'll really buy into it. I like some of the details I see here, and I like that it has a factory snorkel.

With the announcement of the diesel availability in the Ram Rebel I am following the new defender a lot less. I'm still keeping an eye on it but I have a lot less confidence it will have similar capability at the same pricepoint.

Heads up on the FCA 3.0 Diesel. Even though this next Ecodiesel is a "new generation" and you hope for the best, the last generation soiled its reliability track record with total engine failures a far higher rate than normal. I looked at the Ecodiesel three years ago and was put off by its ability to self destruct.

There are still some styling cues from the former - the flat rear door with spare mount, slight slope at roof edge, pretty sure round headlights.

With the flat rear door, the cargo area should be ok. No doubt the additional safety stuff will take up some interior room and sight lines will be hampered.

While I certainly enjoyed ownership of a NAS 90 SW in the US and a 110 with TDI when living in Brazil, feel confident that the new one will actually perform better in stock form.

Time will tell if it will last and still perform after being used as a LR 25 years from now like the former Rovers.

Wait till the camo comes off. I bet it is going to have alpine windows, the triangle bonnet, round headlights, flat front fenders and all that.

It does have the alpine windows. They can be seen in latest shots.

I have been hoping that they would keep some of these things, so it is good to see. The thing that is not working for me on the new Defender is the swept back profile on the windshield, and the way it sits low to the ground with low profile tires.

I doubt they will fix the profile... but I’m still hoping for an option for street vs. off road bias wheel/tire set up.

If these two things are fixed in the final product, I may end up actually liking it.
