More Bumper Problems...

It's just that the gap is odd. Am I supposed to crank down on the bolts and bend that "tab" up 1/3 of an inch to meet with the frame? Am I supposed to have a spacer that I don't know about? The other two bumpers don't have this type of space.

Going to be calling RN customer service.... sometime.... I have no clue when I would get a chance to make that happen.

Yes. That gap is fixable. I'm putting spacers in there till I get a chance to modify the steering guard properly. The stock tie down loops and the brackets for the steering guard will fill that hole.

I'm thinking something like this and attach your winch using lag bolts.

Wasn't there a guy in DiscoWeb who built a massive wooden bumper that he mounted a bunch of fishing poles to?

Yes and no. I bought this bumper in part because of the A/C grill. It gives space to mount the winch. But that is not because the vertical bolt holes are in a different forward/back spot than a standard bumper. They are the same.

The extra space I'm dealing with is a vertical space between the bottom of the frame and the bottom bumper mount.

I must be really describing the problem in the wrong way because a lot of people are not understanding the issue. I'll try to rethink my photos and my description of the issue, and post again.

I take you are having troubles with the sides of the bumper mounts as many manufacturers do not know if you intend to fit i.e. steering guards and what have you.

The brackets on my rid is filled with the steering guard supports on the outer and the lash down brackets on the other. I am guessing this what you are rambling on about?

I will say last week a young lass up the road asked me for some help as she had just got a bumper winch combo for her Jeep. All she needed was a couple of spanners as she wanted to do it her self. She Later returned the tools, had her bumper and winch fitted in a space of three hours.

Maybe you should think of a differant vehicle manufacturer. It's all in good fun lol.

That is one of the issues, but only that I have to modify my steering guard to fit this bumper. In the mean time I'm just filling those spaces (on the inside of each frame rail) with the factory tie-down rings. This issue is fixed.

So, Rovers North isn't answering back. I will have a chance to call them tomorrow.

At this point I need to figure out if I should just bend the plate up to the frame, which would cause it to also kink up flat beneath the flat washers. I kind of think it would put stress on the welds and not be a good thing.

So... should I put a spacer beneath the frame, between the bumper and frame? I don't know if I should just put washers in there, or a real nice spacer. But I'm unsure if I would be able to get the space correct.

At that point, I will have to figure out what to do with the two rear, horizontal bolts that go through the frame. The holes in the frame are not close enough to the holes in the bumper to allow the bolts to work. So... do I drill out the bumper? But how? Do I drill out the frame, ruining the galvanized coating? And I've never had luck just trying to get an existing hole to expand in one direction. The bit just slips into the existing hole, and won't bite into the side where I want to expand the hole.

If RN doesn't have any ideas I would just make some spacers. Measure it up and buy some metal that either fits or is a shade to thick. You can take some thickness off with a flap wheel or have a machine shop mill it down for you.
As for hole alignment you will have to drill your frame or drill the bumper. Either way some finish is going to get spoiled so you will have to make the call. You could spray cold galvy on the frame or spray some paint on the bumper.

Those bumpers with LED's are a pretty recent arrival on the Defender scene. Wondering if puma chassis is different to our 20 plus year old chassis

I managed to get a couple minutes this morning to mount the bumper. With spacers between the lower mounting tab and the frame, I was able to tighten it down without bending the tabs, and the bumper does hold still now.

However, now that it is properly in place, I can tell that there is no way to make my current steering guard fit...........

Rovers North wants me to call, but I work in bad cell coverage, and rarely get more than 5 or 10 minutes to get to a land line.

huh? I had to grind out a JATE ring once on my Classic to accommodate a southdown steering guard.


Why are you using those tie down loops if you have a winch bumper?

These ribs that run along the bottom and back to the rear mounting bolts. They are about 2" too tall to allow the guard to come up to the mounting holes.
