and it's dealer service related...
Even though I'm at 98k miles and out of warranty, I mostly use the dealer for services. I like having others work on my daily. This was supposed to be the big one, and I'd make a decision on doing the rest myself.
Picked up the vehicle yesterday afternoon at dealer closing time. About 5 miles away from the dealer, had to accelerate around slow traffic. Heard a loud pop under power. Classic turbo pressure hose blow off. Pulled off, opened hood, yes. The clamp right at the front was not tightened. The two plastic clips holding the panel right at the hose clamp were not there, I assume shot off when the hose popped up.
Luckily I had an adjustable wrench in the back for swapping trailer hitches - I have one of the anti-rattle things around the hitch I have to remove to swap between my 2 inch and my articulating camper hitch. That got the hose back on solid. I called dealer, they were still there, super apologetic and the tech offered to drive to me and look at it. I told them I had it going and would bring it in this morning. On the way home I had the stereo off to listen, the turbo is whistling like a 90s GTI. Full on japanese street racing stuff. With these small turbos, the noise is basically like a semi distant police car siren. Lots of people walk in my neighborhood and I was getting looks all over the place.
Of course, today back at the dealer they've been able to fix all the clips, inspect everything, and they have no idea what's causing the turbo noise. They say it's legit coming from the turbo, but it's not throwing codes, it's not down on power. They did say they've escalated the issue to see if there is something they can get approved for some type of compensation if there is a turbo replacement.
Oct 1 I leave with the family for a week away, towing the camper 7 hours each way. We'll see what happens. Terrible timing!
