Cars you have owned

Really fun seeing all the vehicles people have had. I regret selling my 2004 Ranger and going on the “I graduated and have a job new car binge“. I tell all my new engineers not to do that. Drive that jalopy from college for at least 3 years and then get a new car.

Here is my list:
1988 Ford Ranger 2wd*
1985 Ford Bronco II 4x4*
1986 Ford Bronco II for parts to do a 2.9L EFI swap in the 1985*
1988 Ford Bronco II for v8 swap parts that never happened*
2004 Ford Ranger Edge 4x4 (first new car)*
1979 GMC suburban small block 400 4x4 (short lived flip)*
1987 Ford F-250 (short lived flip)*
2001 Ford F-250 (short lived flip)*
2005 Ford Focus (2nd new vehicle)* - thought I wanted mpg
2006 Chevrolet Monte Carlo (3rd new vehicle)* - realized mpg was overrated and wanted power
Moved to NZ
1999 Land Rover Discovery*
Back to USA
2004 Dodge Ram 2500 4x4 Cummins*
1994 Land Rover Defender 90 (still have)
2007 Land Rover LR3 (still have)
2017 Ram 1500 ecodiesel (4th new vehicle, still have)
* indicates sold

After a terrible experience with my D1 in NZ my wife couldn’t believe I went and got the 90 shortly after we moved back and then the LR3 a little after that. The LR3 has been awesome and very reliable. And funny the 90 is technically the longest owned vehicles for me but the lowest use and availability haha.

Suppose I should add that two of the cars I’ve owned have been totaled. The Morris Marina and 03xc70. I wasn’t the driver in either instance and neither case was my driver at fault.
The Volvo was totaled by a drunk car salesman at 1am with my son behind the wheel... salesman was not fired...

My first car was a 1966 Ford Mustang(351Clevelend +3 speed) and no seat belts. This was the '80s.
So Dad promptly replaced that engine with a 6 cylinder and we installed lap belts and I lived....

I’ll see your Mustang and raise you my Mini with static seat belts and nothing stopping the front seats from flipping up except your weight.

It was powered by an awesome 998cc A series engine with four in the floor.

Wow.!!!!

I see these lists....and all I think about is....how do you remember all those.

here goes:
1972 Super Beetle
1969 Beetle (new body for the '72 1600)
1983 VW GTI (first auto loan)
1991 Honda CRX (first new car)
1995 Pathfinder SE 4x4
1978 VW Convertible
1970 buggy 1835cc, dual 40 Webers
2001 Honda Odyssey (family time)
1999 Dodge Dakota 4x4
2005 Infinity G35 (mid life / new life time)
2011 Toyota Tacoma 4x4 (current)
2008 Mini Cooper S
2014 Porsche Cayman S (currrent)
2018 Mazda 3 Touring
1988 Land Rover 90 RHD (current)

that wasnt so hard.... some fun memories
of my current vehicles....
the Cayman - fun, fast - mid engine.....fills my autocross & speed needs (wanted a P-car since VW days...especially mid engine)
The Tacoma - fills my load it up, we are going hunting needs
The LR 90 - fills the "always wanted one" need, soon to have R2.8, hopefully less oil on driveway. may not meet the space needs of my hunting vehicle...but...even with a worn 2.5TD (19J) - I would say it is still as much fun as the P-car!....just not in the same way!

1986 LR 110 County SW*
2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4WD*
(Still have *)

10+ work vehicles - service vans, box vans & trucks.

At 16 I seized the engine in my first car (Pinto) by driving it without oil. Random people would tell me at intersections to "CHECK MY OIL!" because they knew what the knocking was, but I kept checking the AT fluid dipstick thinking it was the oil level & it wasn't empty, so... Drive on!
I still don't consider myself a real mechanic, but fast forward to swapping my first engine/trans in the 110 recently!

The Dodge was my dream truck, bought new to my specs, taught my boys to drive a manual with it, my youngest borrowed it a couple years ago, hit ice before center punching a pole & totaled it (No Injuries).

I turned 16 in 1985 and have a very short list.

1973 Volvo 145, which was formerly the family car
1988(?) Suzuki Samurai, which I drove a few summers and winters during college
1982 Saab 900 Turbo (upgraded the front end to the '83 bumper and lights after someone backed into me); purchased after graduating college
1987 Range Rover. Three weeks after we got married, my wife and I drove this coast to coast so I could start graduate school. We sold it in DC shortly before moving to NYC in 1998.
1989 French 110. Living in NYC and London, I was carless until we gave up London in 2015 and brought the 110 home as a memento of our time there.
