Tool Deals Thread

So I had concerns about European customer service, but Amazon.de is awesome.

In a very un-Hazet fashion, my Hazet 190/79 tool box arrived with two 12mm sockets (missing the 13mm) and came with Allen keys rather than torx keys it was supposed to.

I emailed Amazon.de asking if they could send the correct parts (about $40 worth Hazet stuff is spendy). The response was to offer me a 25% discount which will more than cover the missing parts. I don’t care so much about the torx keys ($28 on .de) but I do need a 13mm socket ($8.71) especially because I bought the tool box solely to get the sockets and foam for my other Hazet tool box.

Anyway, I don’t want to look a gift horse in the mouth, but if anyone wants the toolbox minus the sockets, extensions, and foam for the sockets/ratchet/extensions (you can have the spare 12mm and the 3/8th older style ratchet and I put liner in the two open slots for you) and with the hex keys I will do you a deal on it if you can pick it up from outside philly or wilmington. With the currency stuff, sales tax, shipping etc. its over $400 (Hazet stuff is stupid money but even at $400 it is a great deal compared to buying the box and tools separately which is what I mostly ended up doing). Trade for rover parts etc. or $300 OBO. If not I will hawk it to one of my Porsche/European car friends or more likely stick it in a closet. It’s all new never been used, and the worst fault is a few small chips on the chisels from coming loose in shipping. Channel your inner @JimC with foam.

Panel clip pliers from Gearwrench are half off on Amazon at $13. If you are using the puller type still you are missing out. They are out of stock (Amazon often highly discounts out of stock items), but out of stock stuff usually ships a lot quicker than Amazon says.

Also, if you prefer brick and mortar, Lowe’s is clearancing out all their metabo and Bosch power tools. The one I wanted (the little metabo 12v small impact) they only had one left and it was open so I passed (regretting it now), but I am waiting for dewalt to make 12v ratchet and small impact so I can stay in that space.

Does anyone have a recommendation for crimpers for the lucas bullet connectors? I see the pair being sold on all the specialty websites for $30 or whatever, but if there is something on Amazon or made by Knipex I am down for it.

I refuse to buy that overpriced tool. I solder what I need to for repairs. I'd rather buy the damn inserter tool. I really do hate them though.

Unless you are going for factory correct restoration work, why even bother with bullet connectors?
I find the bullets to be easy to work with and repair. In the field you only need heat + solder or pliers to terminate. There no rubber seals that leak or plastic that becomes brittle. They can be packed with grease and/or Oxgard to prevent corrosion. Every termination uses the same connector, so no searching the web for whatever connector failed. Just keep a set of bullets and splices. Also, if the vehicle is currently equipped with bullets, it seems inconsistent to introduce another standard. However, the later pack-type connectors are much faster to connect and disconnect many terminals at once, and when they're new they do keep water out effectively.

This one.

As far as why, I just have so many already with the various rovers and I am a “at least with stock I know what I am dealing with” kind of guy. So, for example, the lights on the 93-94 don’t go to crap like the 95 and 97 and I don’t trust LEDs so I just can live with the ecosystem I know.

If you have heat and solder in the field, you wouldn’t really need the bullet connector...

This is really esoteric, but if you want Stahlwille pliers, but don’t want to pay Stahlwille prices, you can buy VBW pliers who makes them for Stahlwille (and is owned by Stahlwille). They are the same other than the name and red handles rather than green. I know @WreckITFrank and I were texting last night, and I remarked I had all of the 10in water pump pliers except for the NWS (which are crap and what others like Klein rebrand) and the Stahlwille. Well, I did some digging and found VBW on Amazon.de so I bought the 180mm and 240mm for like $30 each so I bought those.

One other one, I don’t really see deals on Beta (I have avoided Amazon Italy) but on .de they have a nice set for $300 for your alfa, maserati, Ferrari, Ducati

Based on prices elsewhere, this is a really good deal (even with $100 shipping).

Oh you definitely need the bullets if you're a civilized, roll up your Avedon & Colby sleeves, Rolex sporting man doing a proper repair that lasts. How else does one even sleep at night?

How well do they compare to Gedore and Knipex pliers?

Back to made in USA.

$37 for a mayhew 60in (yes, 5 feet) alignment pry bar.

I have the five piece set of dominator striking cap ones ($80) — first set was lost in the mail, second set arrived today, and the set of three lady feet ones ($60). I was suitably impressed. Thinking about a 54in regular striking cap one ($110), but the five foot alignment one showed up on sale for $37 which is a no brainer to me for a USA made steel.

I also have a couple of the 17in straight screwdriver striking cap pry bars which are excellent for dealing with those old, giant slotted screws in old houses. ($14 on sale half off).

And ordered a set of brass punches ($34), but have not received them yet.

More Mayhew sale items:

10-Piece "Cats Paw" screwdriver set, made in France

1" carbon scraper, made in USA

12" version of the Dominator Pry Bar, made in USA

I will let you know when I get them. German Tool Reviews put them second behind the Knipex, but tools and trash says they have the hardest jaws and are the most durable.

Good deals on Mayhew. I have the scraper and I have the 17in slotted prybar (two of them which were $15? I think), but not the 12in. I really want the screwdrivers but I have banned myself from buying any more screwdrivers. I do have the big punch set coming. I wonder who makes the mayhew screwdrivers in France? Facom maybe? $57 is a great deal for a full set like that. Wera chisel drivers will cost you double, and your amex will melt with Hazet or Stahlwille. My last purchase was the big set of Wera stainless for $70 (after 10% code at KCTool). I do have a bad habit of working outside there so I thought that would be a nice thing to have (and I can use the Felo wood ones for striking caps).

Should I buy a Chinese made Stahlwille caliper for $100? Even their $2 pen is nice.

I think I should. Thoughts? I have until midnight.

I don’t think I would want digital at that price point. I haven’t looked at prices, but I imagine you could get a really nice traditional vernier caliper $100

Yes, and then let us know if we missed out, or you did. I'm sure there's something you haven't bought lately that would justify it.

Screw it’s $100. I am adding a Gedore pen to get the free stickers. I have a non-digital one, but it was like $20.

The only thing I have not bought lately is the set of Klein bags of my dreams (all the colors). At this point, the only justification is it’s a deal. I know this has gotten absurd ....
