How about some UK files? I have no idea where they are made, but here is a Draper (primary line, not redline) files set of 8 for $41 via Amazon global. I have the Pferds from Amazon.de, but another set for the other house would be nice and this one includes rasps.

Cable Shears

After talking to my electrician tool enabler @WreckITFrank I ended up ordering both the channellock and the Gedore 8094 cable shears (Frank informs me they are called loppers). I had also ordered the Kleins (Frank loves Klein) too, but they won’t fit in the pouch after I measured so I cancelled them. The Gedore 8094 are the same as the Knipex 95 11 200 so they will fit in the pouch at 200mm. Like exactly the same as the Knipex except for the branding. Normally they are more expensive than the Knipex, but I found them for $45 which is $7 less than the Knipex on prime and close enough to the price of the Knipex on .de that I did not feel so bad ordering it. Basically it came down to I have channel locks in the main set so they fit with my motif better than the Kleins and the Kleins in the castle set but they won’t fit in the pouch but I also have Gedore there. I am sure I will regret not getting the Kleins. It won’t be a high use tool so maybe not.

So I have analyzed Gedore’s product line because it is about as confusing as possible.

I had ordered all three of the Gedore 142 pliers (-7, -10, -12 referring to inches) in red dipped handles as a set for the castle. They were on sale and the price was basically the same as the Knipex cobras. I am not sure that I have a preference. I tried them out head to head today (finally got some wrenching in although I accomplished very little). The Gedore are pointier tipped on the ends and seem to grip nuts better, but the Knipex seem to grip round things better.

Back to the red handles on Gedore. It’s super confusing because Gedore has a “Gedore Red” line (which is the entry level stuff, mostly Taiwan, but sometimes Germany or Austria and the same as Gedore [Blue] but just says “Gedore Red” on it), but then they offer red dipped handle, mainly for the US market and the dipped red handle stuff is regular Gedore, not Gedore Red. But then they make Gedore Red with red handles (although those are red and black from what I have seen). I don’t think Gedore could have made this more confusing if they tried, but being german/austrian I am sure they believe it makes perfect sense.

I am a Knipex comfort grip fan (and VDE) mainly because they give good grip and are easy to clean. The Gedore/Stahlwille/Knipex textured grips are great if you have greasy hands, but they are super hard to clean (I have given up on the one set of Knipex cobras — it’s patina at this point). I even went so far as to order a bare chrome steel set of Gedore 142-10 pliers just so I had a greasy hands pliers that I could easily clean (and they were on super discount on Amazon). But the dipped are easy to clean too and don’t feel like crap and won’t freeze your hands when cold like the bare ones. Based on the condition of my channellocks, they will get beat up over time, but they hold up well enough.

Enough ranting, back to deals.

Gedore Wrench Set, 8-32mm, 20 pieces, $181 on Amazon.com (NOT .de)

This is a smoking deal. These are the made in Germany Gedore wrenches hot forged and all and the price is the same as .de (when you back out VAT) and you don’t have to pay shipping from Germany which is $48 stand alone. They are the standard pattern wrenches, so if you want the long ones (the XL) or the somewhat longer ones with the offset head (the B) they are not for you. Amazon.com seems to have some very good Gedore deals like this, but it is very hit (like the $46 cable shears or $27 142-10 chrome) or miss (like me paying $47 for locking pliers).

If I did not have the Stahlwille 13/26 set I would get these.

Same price on Amazon. May pick one up. Was debating getting the Sunex 208 piece version, but the other brand 208 sets are $25 v. $50 for the sunex. Good to know the titan is holding up! One good thing is that you can get these overnight on Amazon so if I need them I can get one ASAP.

Pretty inclusive Titan set above. These Megapro 15 in 1 drivers are great when you run across different sized/types fasteners and don't have a box set at arms length for some applications. For example, saves time up & down the ladder for me. Oh, and the end rotates so you can palm the end with one hand, tighten/untighten and keep your other hand on the ladder..which is kinda important.

34% off

No discount on this Megapro Hex driver but worth getting. There's also a tamperproof and torx variant as well.

While we are on the topic, the Klein 27 in 1 security bit screwdriver is on sale for $25

So I bought that. Sort of it the titan set mated with the megapro. With the Klein precision set I think I can get almost any fastener undone. :)

I bought both the Klein 7 in 1 magnetic nut driver and the Lenox 6 in 1 nut driver. Lenox is the clear winner to me. It’s smaller, has both a hex bolster and a nut bolster, and it’s less than half the price (on sale for $14).

My quest for a deal on the dewalt 3/8in impact I wanted is over. I want the three speed short brushless one, and it has the hog ring (indifferent at this point)

CPO outlets has it with two batteries with indicators, bag etc. for $110 on Amazon. It says new (even though CPO outlets does sell reconditioned).

Home Depot I never made it over to see if I could find the $149 and free 5.0ah deal.

Will report back if it works out. The two smaller batteries and charger i think is the better deal than the Home Depot deal. Prices on these dewalt things are all over the map and Amazon itself often does not have the best deal.

Amazon.de giveth, Amazon.de taketh away.

My Stahlwille 21/7 wrench set arrived and it was a 21/6 (the 14x15mm was missing). It was pretty bizarre because this is the first package that did not look like it went through a war zone from DHL. And the box looked completely factory sealed (admittedly for Stahlwille this is just pieces of tape). I emailed .de and they would send me a replacement, and it was worded in a way that made it seem like they would like me to send the old one back and maybe I did not have to, but I am too honest to game the system and I did not want to pay and get reimbursed for the international shipping so I took the discount of $18. Unfortunately, the missing wrench is $21 on KCTool (plus I have a 10% discount code) so I am out about a dollar. Since I made out on 190/79 Hazet with the two 12mm and the Allens not torx, I am still to the good. Haha. Now if Misterworker would send me my two orders and the Heuer vise would get sent out from DHL in Germany in would be in good shape!

BTW, I am spreading the addiction to rennlist. Keep in mind that this is the 991 GT forum so these people all have cars that start at the price of a very nice NAS110 and I introduced them to the Gedore Red set I love so much.

Ok so no more buying not from prime. The CPO outlets dewalt impact appears to be new, but the charger is not working. Let’s see how their customer service is.

Ok great customer service from CPO Oulets and I am an idiot. The batteries were just too tight and were not seating all the way. Once I gave them some oumph they work fine.

So can someone explain the difference between a cordless screwdriver and a drill/driver?

cordless screwdriver:

Drill/driver:

Once again reiterating my status as an idiot, I thought the 3/8 impact I bought was 20v (that’s what I was searching for) but it’s 12v so now I have opened that Pandora’s box of batteries, I ought to get at least another tool ....

So which one do I want and why? Let’s assume I have “things that drill” and I am mainly looking to remove and fit screws easily so as to not depreciate my collection of screwdrivers.

What about depreciation of the power screwdriver? More importantly, what about your other fine German tools? Will the final and ultimate purchase of this thread be one of those Walmart 200 piece toolkits?

If you’re willing to use the thing, you want an electric screwdriver, but not necessarily that one. As you noticed, it’s built in the form of a drill or impact driver. There are far more compact options for screwdrivers. I have a Makita subcompact impact driver and its great for construction projects or removing screws, but not what a mechanic would use.

I use my milwaukee m12 stubby impact driver as my daily go to. Have 1/4 and 3/8 socket adapters. Mostly saves my arthritic wrists from further annoyance and pain. Between all the screws and m6 bolts on the defender, I use it more than anything else.

No idea why they existed until I really started using it. Variable trigger speed, torque settings, and super light.
