Turbo Movement

How much is OK? I found that the odd sounds I had been hearing were from a leak. But while looking into my starter problems today, I checked the turbo impeller and found what I think is a lot more forward and back movement than before. Hard to see, but it feels like it is moving about 1/8 of an inch.

Yea that's probably too much , mine has about 70k on it and moves less than a mm or two back and forth and less than that radially

You can get a turbo rebuilt for a reasonable (much less than a brand-new unit) price. I had mine done at a place in Tacoma. They took a blown turbo that looked like it came off the bottom of the ocean and made it good-as-new again.

What was your total cost with shipping back and forth? I bought a Genuine for $650 shipped and sold the core for $250, net $400 for brand new with no downtime.

I don't think my Turbo had that much play when I had it replaced. Although I never technically measured it.

But mine did move enough that during a routine drive the fan stopped and the truck wouldn't restart.

That's exactly where I bought mine, albeit at a different exchange rate. Looking hard at their IP's which also seem to be as good as rebuild prices.

Exchange rates are pretty good right now but they change daily with them. I know because what I had in my cart went up by a dollar and a bit the next day when I finally placed an order.
Still a huge savings over US based suppliers. It's hard not to order big ticket items right now.

That's not the turbo I have on my truck. Mine is stamped ERR4893.

Anyone know what is the difference?

This is video of the movement. You can see the side to side, but people say that's not so concerning. Then I grab the shaft and it moves forward and back. It is hard to see in the video, but you can hear it moving, knocking back and forth, when I move it along the axis.

A rebuild is something like $500. So I'd like to make sure it looks like it needs a rebuild before I go through the process.

rebuild needed...

Sooner than later. There should be almost no play at all, the "wallow" you have will only get worse and allow the vanes to contact and wear into the housing.

Thanks.

Yeah, the axis play back and forth has happened just in the last 1500 miles.

Time to replace. I would either pay $500 for NEW turbo or $200 for a new CHRA. If you can turn a wrench you can replace just the center section. I would not pay $500 for someone to rebuild an old CHRA.

How do you know if that's all you need? And where do you get one?

CHRA is everything BUT compressor cover, exhaust housing, wastegate. If the wastegate still works (likely) and the compressor cover and exhaust housing are still in good shape (turbo didn't get loose enough to where wheels hit) then you should be good to go. From what I see of yours it still looks OK but taking the covers off before buying anything would be the smart choice.

Something like this. You might be able to change it without even removing the exhaust. I know I could do it on my high mount 200TDI.

This is a CHRA

Where to buy?

LRD for new turbo

There is Turbo Rebuild UK or Melett that offer CHRA's. I imagine other vendors can get you something too.

When mine goes I have been weighing springing the money for the Allisport ($1200?), the upgraded billet wheel Turbo Rebuild UK ($400), or just a new Garrett ($500). I have my truck running so damn good now I almost don't want to mess with anything. It starts right, no smoke, enough power to pull to 85mph or "comfortably" cruise at 70.
