LT230 Reseal

Well the salt has been put on the roads already here in VT, so the Defender is going into hibernation for a while. I'm building up the motivation to drop my Lt230 out of the truck to tackle the excessive oil leak it has. I got the kit from Roversnorth with all of the gaskets and O-rings. I'm wondering if anyone has any advice on what else I should be addressing while it's out, the drivetrain has @ 120k miles on it. Or any other advice in general. Thanks.

Funny you say that, that's how this all started, I have them out to replace the U-joints, and then thought...well you know. Now, I'm thinking maybe I should do my clutch too, if I'm that close to it.

^^^^^. That and even with a new O-Ring on the intermediate shaft I would still cover the end with Rightstuff. The entire plug end all the way onto the aluminum casting. I don’t trust any of it. Just has a shady look in its one eye... “I’m gonna leak on you one day! And your little dog, too”

The main inspection plate on the bottom, some of the bolt holes are through drilled into the area where all the gear oil is. Be sure to clean bolts thoroughly and the holes too. Use brake or carb cleaner to get all the gear oil off of those bolts & threaded holes. Then I used the orange colored PermaTex form a gasket.

Even a couple of the Ashcroft cases I’ve seen leak after they’ve been broken in.

Thanks for all of this, sounds like they're prone to leak no matter what you do. Mine has gotten gradually worse to the point of excessive, I worry about it when I'm chugging along on long drives.
