So you let the pick up at the motor do the work?

If I understand correctly (and I might not, I'm sorta new to diesels), A diesel uses a lift-pump at the engine to suck fuel from the tank, then an injector pump to pressurize it. A gasoline engine uses a fuel pump to pressurize, and push the fuel leaving the tank.

Yes. I'm just not sure why the electric pump in the tank is something to get rid of. Maybe because of the issue I'm having?

People remove it to simplify the system, no wiring needed.

Engine doesn't need it if the cam operated lift pump is present

Not related - the in-tank pumps are challenging in their own way, but the diesel system is simple, reliable, and easy to service (two bolts, and two fuel fittings to change the pump without messing around with the fuel tank at all)

If the swap was done from in-tank petrol pump to just a fuel pickup tube, the pickup tube may not go all the way to the bottom of the tank, or you incorrectly are using the return line as the pickup. If the tube is close to the bottom of the tank then consider fitting a fuel sock, if not close enough then have a new pickup brazed onto the existing fitting.

Sorry I missed you again!

I just remembered looking into adding a TD5 tank when there was a free tank a while ago. This might be something important to check

You can suck fuel out of the low pressure outlet side OK, getting it back in the return is another matter. It seems to have a pressure sensitive valve in the return which is open on tickover but that closes once the fuel really starts flowing back whilst driving. Find this, knock it out and it'll work fine or experiment with using either the hp pickup or return, or just tap a return into the top.
