American Collectors or USAA actual? I left them for car insurance on the commuters after Geico was about 40% less, pound for pound. Still have American Collectors for the defenders.
I think I looked into them, thought I ruled them out because they had a garage requirement

FWIW, USAA has started to suck hard.
That has been our experience as well. We have been hardcore USAA loyalists for decades, but dropped their auto a few years ago over the way they handled an auto claim for one of our daughters.

Can you elaborate? Because I think I'm starting to agree about a mistake they made on an accident I was involved in 2 years ago...
It’s becoming a death by a thousand cuts for me. I’ve not had one of the claims debacles that I’m hearing more and more stories about (fingers crossed) but they’re just falling down on so many things. It started when I noticed they were advertising for the first time a few years back. Then they wouldn’t insure our airstream, and now I find out they don’t insure motorcycles at all anymore. They fumbled a car loan for me recently when they decided the Morgan was too weird, initially approved it only to call back later with a mealy-mouthed declination. Got buckets of unsecured cash from Lightstream at like 3% but a company I’ve been doing business with for almost 30 years wanted like 8%. They recently faile dot send out a replacement for a credit card that got compromised. Just lots of crap adding up.

They have also refused to write loans for their members stationed overseas. They will write overseas insurance, but not the loan. I've been a member since I was a Second Lieutenant, and they wouldn't even talk to be about it. Something is definitely "different" there, and not in a good way.

Requirements for clean records on all household members and garaging are both more frequent than a few years ago.

Most recent example for us. Received a notice they were increasing our auto insurance by up to 22%. Gave the reason of 3 recent accidents, all NOT OUR FAULT hit and runs, one was 12 years old! All documented with police reports. Long story short, appealed to the Maryland insurance commission, where we live, and USAA withdrew the increase
