300tdi smokes while turning over -No start.

Im working on a no start issue on a non EGR, non EDC, single wire to solenoid, 300tdi. It stalled while driving and has low coolant. I don't believe it to be the head gasket causing the no start, no run issue -I could be wrong. As I turn the engine over I get plenty of white smoke from the exhaust and it sounds as if it wants to fire or as if it is partially firing but no start. I have read that it could also be some issue with air in the fuel lines. I have changed 6, 200tid head gaskets. None of which wouldn't start at the time of me changing them. I cracked the bleed screw at the top of the fuel filter and primed the lift pump. There were a few bubbles so, I understand I could have air in the lines. My 200tdi will self prime. Stands to reason that a 300tdi would as well. So Im looking for some help. As I understand it, the injection pump has to be in 1 of 4 positions to use the lift pump to prime the lines to the injectors. Can anyone verify this and or tell me how to identify at what position the crank should be in order to accomplish this?
Cheers
Russell

Have you checked the fuel filter?
Is it getting diesel at the injectors?
I am doing this by myself. I cracked open the pipes at the injectors and turned it over and got fuel sprayed in the engine bay so at least the #1 and #2 are getting fuel. It was harder to tell weather the other two are getting fuel.

Update to my situation. I pulled the rocker cover and rocker and push rods. None were bent -so that's good news I think. I got most of what needs to be removed to get to the timing belt and marks then ran out of time. Of note and possibly related or unrelated is that one of the rods had some rub marks though it is straight. I have replaced a few bent rods and have never run into new ones that come with marks like these on them so, its concerning anyway. Edit: The pics aren't as clear as I had hoped. I've seen probably 40 pushrods new and used. Of the ones not bent by a broken timing belt, I have not seen any with rub marks. Id be interested to hear if anyone else has.

Have you checked your timing?
I checked timing which was spot on, then I checked compression. Check these out, 200, 98, 80, 198. So I pulled the head. WOW. This thing was bad. The 2nd and 3rd cylinders had cracks from the glow plug to the injector and a crack between the valves. I ordered a new head. Then when I started to transfer the injectors the 2nd and 3rd were warped and stuck. So I ordered new injectors. Im waiting on them at the moment. I'll post an update when they come in and I get this thing buttoned up.

That will certainly do it!
Just curious, did it get really hot during your ownership
I don't own this one. I'm repairing it for someone else. I can see that it has a thermometer in the exhaust manifold but no gauge for EGT in the cab. I think it probably is over-fueled and somewhere along the way someone took out the EGT gauge and its been driven hard and long. The head looks terrible.

Pictures for proof haha. I tried to upload a video of the thing running, but it wouldn't load.
