Spy shot of new Defender

That's not really a surprise, is it?

Not really. Nonetheless I was still hoping that it would be a modern interpretation. But it's sounding more likely that it's going to get the same corporate face that the rest of the line has.

The Toyota FJ had a modern interpretation and sold well at first but is now gone. The Wangler has continued to follow the traditional look and it's done them well. The new Discovery really doesn't look like it's a continuation but more like the new Range Roverish face, I'm sure it will sell well for newer buyers. I agree the new Defender will look more like the new corporate direction.
Fingers crossed we will all be wrong but after reading that Q&A it doesn't look promising.

The FJ is an interesting creature. obviously Toyota didn't see the business case to keep it around in the US (it was still sold elsewhere until very recently IIRC). But for the past few years used ones have been selling at or over their MSRP when new.

The Honda Element is in the same situation. Used prices are insane. Seems like everyone wants to keep them until the body rots off.

I have one as a daily driver and I don't see selling it any time soon. 08 with 66k miles on the clock and I just swapped in new struts, shocks and added the ARB rack.

So they still haven't announced anything in a while. Jeep will have their pickup out late next year(2017). I predict late 2019 for the Defender, one year after Jeep sells their production version of the Africa concept.

And then who cares if the Defender is not like it used to be, right? We will have what we want in a Jeep Africa...And LR won't have to listen to us bemoan the fact that they betrayed the heritage of the Defender.

Exactly. Like I have said before, they'll show up 2 years to late to the party, the product won't sell the way it is supposed to and the McGovern's of LR will feel vindicated and continue down the path of selling vehicles under the idea of "Land Rover, Range Rover. Because Land Rover, Range Rover."

I know this... what has been shown is what it will be. It will be only slightly different because it will need to be factory produced. But if they show it at a show, that's pretty much it.

I don't mind the DC100. But I just don't get why they think it is a replacement for the Defender. And from what I've seen first hand, the off-road abilities of these vehicles is impressive. But it just isn't the same thing.....

If you are right then for me they will be 6-7 years late. I actually liked the DC100 minus the rims. If they did 16" or 17" on that it wouldn't have been as bad. That said I bought a newer Ford Escape in 2012 when I moved back to the US. It was ideal then but we sold it since it wasnt big enough. Now that we have 3 kids a 2 door will never be in driveway(except for the 65 iia 88" project i have coming).

Their 4 door variant that I assume will only seat 5 needs to not suck dick and cost less than $45,000 for me to consider it. If it costs more and cant seat 7 with loads of space for other shite then it's worthless compared to other vehicles available. It also needs to come out in about a year and a half from now when the minivan is toten hosen.

IF Jeep makes this Africa concept a reality, I see them targeting Europe wholeheartedly. If the DC100 is the LR reality, I see Jeep becoming the new utilitarian vehicle for farm/work vehicles. I would buy the Africa any day over DC100 or DC110.

The only problem with Jeep is that EVERYONE has one..... Makes you wonder who is doing the market studies in Land Rover. The market is actually ripe for a competitor.

I think their market studies are similar to the original child car seat study. Compare using a car seat with a seat belt holding it in place to a child wearing no seat belt at all.

If you setup your research to get a specific finding then you'll get that finding. The way they market in the US is very limiting. The lack of ability to get the lower trim Discovery 3/4 highlights that. They've told themselves it's impossible to build a vehicle similar to the Defender so many times that they have convinced themselves it is true. Clearly that isn't the case because the Wrangler Unlimited exists and Jeep is even making the quad cab pickup. McGovern had success with the Freelander and the Evoque because they came at the right time.

DC100 first exposure: September 2011.
Todays date: 1 January 2017.
Still no "Defender."

The new Wrangler Unlimited has been around since 2007. FJ Cruiser has come and gone. 4Runner has been crushing it since before the DC100.

Yeah, I like my 4Runner Trail. Congrats on the Series purchase. I still have the 1960 SII that started my addiction. Good stuff. Drew

The africa concept is appealing, the most appealing truck Ive seen in a while. I like the 4 Runners always have, the current with the high belt line and long hood are cumbersome. Hard to beat the view from the driver seat of the D90, Disco or Classic
