What tire size can I run on my alloy wheels?

Hello all. I am replacing the very dry-rotted tires on my 1997 110 fresh from South Africa. It has these wheels installed that are marked 7Jx16x33.0AH2 and currently has 265/70R16 tires on it. I really prefer the tall skinny look for Defender tires, so want to know if 235/85R16 tires would fit on these wheels. Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

Best options in my opinion:
7.50 r16 (tall skinny. original size. not many options left but BFG makes them)
235/85/16 (nearly the same, the metric equivalent as above but just slightly wider. way more options.)
255/85/16 (taller by about 1/2-1" still skinny.)

actual sizes vary by manufacturer so the above is a rough guide.

All will fit your "deep dish" alloys.

And now the fun commences! What tire! A/T; M/T; etc.. A plethora of manufacturers from which to choose.

In my opinion, the 7.50 X 16 are too narrow for alloys. They are good for 5.5in wide steel wheels.

Get 235 85 R16. That is the factory size for 110s with alloy wheels.

Agreed 235/8516 or 265/75-16. It just comes down to personal appearence preference.

235/85-16 is probbably the right answer. Personally I'd probbably want something a bit larger. 255/85-16 is probbably the best answer if you want to go taller. 265 is the 'recommended' limit width wise for a 7" wheel, but I and many others have run 285/75-16's without any real issue, so, just to confuse matters more..

I second the slightly larger 255 85 16. I have run KM2’s in that size on a 90 with OME suspension (so about 2” lift) — they look great, ride nice, and are available.

Priapus, it looks like your 110 is lifted too, is it?

I actually have no idea. I didn’t get any history on it, but it’s possible. What would I look at to figure that out? Here’s a better side shot.

Bigger wheels/tires add unsprung weight and rolling resistance, change the overall gearing, reduce speedo/odo accuracy and are that much harder to muscle around and find a place to mount the spare.

But you are only listing the downsides..
