Turbo

My turbo whistles loudly. Seems to warble a bit when in the spot where engine is between idle and power.

Does anyone know anything about testing, rebuilding, or buying new turbos?

I would like to drive this thing before I retire!!

"Embrace the whistle!"

My BRAND NEW VNT turbo I bout for my 300tdi whistled when it was first installed. I went to a diesel shop, and they said some turbos just do that.

Depending on your exhaust set up, the whistle will be more noticeable. If you have a free flow straight through exhaust you'll notice it much more than if you have a muffler or silencer installed.

The warble may be your wastegate making noise. That is normal.

I have a stock LR exhaust. Better than the ProLine, not as good as free-flow, but cheaper!

I'll have to inspect it, and maybe take it to get looked at. The good news is that it was only a bit dirty when I installed the motor, so I should be able to see if there is any noticeable change in how much oil is in there.

Jason, when you got the VNT, do you think it was worth it for the money? I think I remember that you can also fit larger turbos to the same spot. I'm really not worried about upgrades yet, just want to get on the road! But if something breaks, I will look to the upgrades as a replacement.

I think it was, but my VNT was the replacement on the D1 300Tdi and not on a 110. My D1 was pretty built-up and a pretty heavy rig. The most noticeable improvement in performance was when I accelerated from a dead stop.

If you buy a brand new turbo, the price difference between OEM and the VNT was small enough it made it worth while.

I've heard the same thing from several people about the VNT. Thanks.

By the way, Craig is actually toying with selling the 300Tdi Classic when I talked to him a few weeks ago! But he was torn on the idea.

Craig went through this a couple years ago. He thought about it and changed his mind. That classic is just way too nice, and he has it set up perfect for him and his family.

You might be able to buy just the CHRA center section. As long as your compressor cover and rear housing are good. I've seen them for $200-$400. They sell some upgraded ones too.

So due to all the problems I've had with just orderin and actually getting the right or not already broken parts, where should I start looking for either a replacement or a rebuild kit?

Ouch! I think I'll be looking into a rebuild this time around. Maybe save for an upgrade in a few years time.

There is at least one place in town that rebuilds, and other Rover owners have taken their stuff there.

It also seems like there was someone in Vancouver that would rebuild our turbos. Usually had rebuilds in stock and would do a swap. I just can't remember the name of the place. I will do some research.
