Turbo burning bonnet insulation

Let me preface this by admitting that I have not installed my EGT yet. Bonnet insulation (replaced with new in April 2019) now has a hole in it from the turbo either sitting too close or getting too hot. Short trips kept this from being a problem before. I noticed the insulation was appearing like it got hot, but with the heat shield being NLA, what to do? I recently wrapped the down pipe - would that increase the turbo temp? Or was it due to a longer trip with steep hills? I smelled "burning" while heading up the Siskiyou Pass & while there was no fire, had to squirt water into the hole to stop the smoldering. Has anyone come up with a solution to replace the NLA turbo heat shield?

I would ditch the heat shield and put some Dynamat Extreme on the underside of that bonnet. These little motors don't put enough heat out to need a heat shield and the Dynamat will help with the noise.

You could trim a rather liberal square section out of the insulation where it comes in contact with the turbo.

I've seen it on a ton of trucks. The original sty le shield on these early trucks was like a fiberglass that would not burn.

Either trim it or get what's called a turbo blanket.

I guess it's good to know it's common.
I'll be cutting a section out & put a square of Dyna mat Extreme in its place.
...& a turbo blanket.

I have the hood liner on some seven years now and still holding up on my 90, that's with the stock and VNT turbos.

formed asbestos= why its nla
Turbo's get hot a sheild is a good idea. Think I have a couple of those in the hoard.
Even a formed piece of sheet metal attached to the original standoff brackets is better than nothing.
