trick to fan removal

I need to remove the fan on the 300tdi. I have a spanner. Is there a trick? It just spins the pulleys/fan when I try. I'm turning it clockwise. I promise.

Also, when the motor is off should I be able to spin it in either direction by hand?

If you have the correct tool, just keep hitting it with a mallet until it works. It depends on how long it’s been on there
Yes, you can spin either way, it’s a viscous clutch

Tap it in... You can also put a little pressure on the belt to help resist.

There are also plenty of water pump holding tools out there to stop that from rotating while you whack the fan clutch spanner/wrench.
