Towing Capacity D110 300tdi

Looking to upgrade the family camper from a small pop up to a 16' Scamp or Casita.

Based on my research it looks like the 110 can tow about 1600 lbs without brakes, and up to 7700 lbs with brakes. What is the real world towing capacity for extended road trips? Not a huge drop in power or fuel efficiency as well as safe to manage behind the 110.

Our current camper is around 1000 lbs and I don't think the truck even really notices it. The campers I am looking at range in weight from 2400 to 2800. Which puts them well below the weight for towing with brakes.

Thoughts?

I have owned several camper trailers (four or five from small to light weight hard sided) and have towed with the 3.9 and the 4.6 Rover engines. The 300Tdi feels a lot like a 3.9. I would expect to really start feeling it at above 1600 lbs., especially on the hills.

Technically, the LWB should be nice for towing. I would seriously take a look at where the trailer axle is compared to the tongue, etc... The right balance makes a huge difference, especially if your trailer is as tall as the vehicle itself.

My pop up is (Fleetwood Neon) is on a custom chassis, 33" MT's and rover disc brakes. It is in the 2000lb category. On flats going places like Nebraska from Denver, it is great, no problem. Going up to 10,000' over steep passes, it can be a bit more of a dog. I wouldn't want any heavier---I have a 4.6 V8. I'm super glad I have trailer brakes.
