Speedometer Jumping

My Speedometer started jumping, occasionally makes some clicking noise or sits at 0. New mechanical MPH speedo & cable. The cable is Britpart & the square insert part that goes into my speedo is plastic. I figured it stripped out, but when I checked it was fine. It's not a loose connection at the speedo. I pulled it apart, refit it & it's tight. Now I'm thinking the cable must be binding internally & releasing in spurts. If that's the case, it can't last long before breaking.

I'll pull it apart & grease it (Didn't know it was a serviceable part) & check the routing. Report back this weekend.
Bellinghammer, Sounds like we have the same issue. Let me know what works for yours.

Removed my speedo cable & I don't think this one can be taken apart, so I sprayed CorrosionX into it & attached my drill to spin it in. I also changed the routing a bit to make it as smooth as possible. Zip tied it away from the down pipe & it seems to have fixed the jumping during the first test run. I only got up to 45, but no jumping, so fingers crossed...

Past experience tells me that a jumpy speedo is often followed by cable failure...

^^That won't surprise me. If it was binding & not spinning, but also staying connected at the ends, it makes sense that the cable has been compromised.

Pulled mine off this weekend and the cable was not spinning very smoothly, new cable ordered and on its way. There was also a tight bend in the routing, I’ll correct that when I install the new one.

You can remove the inner cable and grease it . Also make sure the inner cable is almost sticking out too far when you insert it into the speedo . It will fully seat this way and move back into the sheath as needed.

Sometimes takes a few tries

Can we his be greased with same grease used on prop shaft u-joints?
