They've produced other retro models before this one. Odd that it's a resto mod and not new production considering the price.
Since JLR can't produce enough of their new model line because of the chip shortage they're building something that needs less chips. Too bad they canned traditional LR design principles long ago. It's made them especially vulnerable to the shortage.

Every manufacturer is in the same chip shortage hole.

Exactly!! Yet it seems that in today’s market consumers want more and more electric gizmos versus less.

That may be true but I seriously question that when I read articles that GM is adding a third shift to pick up truck production. Granted there are a lot of chips in vehicles these days.

JLR has $500mm in losses this year, due in large part to their inability to produce enough to meet market demand because of the chip shortage. They admit that since their vehicles are on average more complex than most other mfg's, it has given them reason to reconsider that approach. This is a good thing.

What we know is JLR made a boatload on selling 13 XK-SS, because they had the VIN numbers laying around. Then they pulled something similar with an E Type. It stands to reason they would keep milking the cow.

All the big euro luxury manufacturers except BMW have “classic” departments that restore vehicles. Merc, Ferrari, Porsche, JLR. Rover seems to do it with newish defenders, the next newish I have seen is Porsche with the CGT.

It’s a side business, but classic parts is apparently very profitable and the restoration business is part of that.
