Snap-on roll cabs

Does anybody here own a Snap-on roll cab? I am looking to buy one but I'm not certain what size I want. I've been looking at the KRL722 and the larger KRL1022 and KRL1023 cabs.

I'm particularly interested in others' experience with the used market. I've been looking around for a good deal on a nice one but every one I've found so far has either been in crappy shape, too far away, or overpriced.

What's the typical discount off full retail if bought new from a Snap-on rep with cash? What about private party used pricing when the cab is in really nice shape? Not sure what is reasonable to expect to pay for a cab that might cost $13K retail.

I had a Stap-On roll cab and top box in the past. Good quality, but quite expensive. The Snap-On guys are independent dealers, but they do take trades (or did) on your old stuff when you buy new. You may be able to find a good used one through them. My recommendation is there are other manufacturers that are a better value, look at some others too.

Ok, YMMV so take this with a grain of salt. These days Snap-On dealers are franchise operators. So effectively, they own what ever they have on the truck. I have found that the dealer(s) around my area are in no mood to make any sort of deal for a guy they have no standing relationship with. So unless he has a box he ordered for a guy and that guy crawfished on him, there is no cash vs. credit price. In the old days they would extend "truck" credit, the dealer would cary a guy for a certain amount. Now it's just like buying a car, you get a line of credit through Snap-on and it's just like a car loan. Most of the Snap-On dealer do take trades, so they get MAC, Cornwell etc and they will generally make a deal on those. OR, talk to your guy and see what he will give in trade on old Snap-On boxes. They have been generous with me a couple of times. So in theory you can spend a couple hundred on a beat up box and get several more hundred on trade. Again, you need to have a relationship with the dealer. Also consider that you can get parts from Snap-On for a lot of the older stuff, drawers, slides etc. For that I just go to Snap-On on line, dealers don't like to jack around with parts usually. I got Snap-On to warranty a top box for me once, the slides in the cabinet were worn out. I had to go around the dealer to the regional guy,the local deal is a tool, no pun intended.

As far as the double bank roll cabs go, the KRL722 is the smallest. That is what I have (along with the top box and locker). They are all the same width, but the others are deeper and taller. I personally don't like the super deep ones, which are very common. I wouldn't use my box as a work bench (place to accumulate junk), so the height isn't a big deal to me. If you're mostly working on your Defender, you probably won't ever need a bigger box than the KRL722.

So, this box is going to be in my garage and will be used as a work bench and storage chest. I'm going to mount a vise on it. I'm tall and use a stand-up desk in my office at 48" so some height is nice for me. I don't like the look of the add-on side lockers/cabinets but I also want this chest to hold garage things like extension cords, jack stands, etc., so I may get some of those as well.

My tools would fit nicely in the KRL722 so I'm sure I'd have lots of unused space (junk) in a larger chest. It's a tough call. What I really want is something like the 722 but with taller bottom drawers for the big crap so that I didn't need a locker.

Find one on Craigslist... There are always high-end tool boxes from all the brands.

Chris, The KRL722 is going to be too short for you. You will be hunched over if you want it as a work bench. I'll take a picture of me next to mine when I'm back at work on Monday so you can see.

EDIT: This is totally dependent on the height you like the work bench to be. The KRL722 is 39" tall.

I want a tall one for sure. The higher the work top, the better. As far as width goes, I want something mid-range. The one thing I'm concerned about is having the top full-width drawers be so wide that they're heavy as shit with all of the tools and can't be opened and shut quickly when I'm looking for something.

Most people fill the wide deep drawers with sockets, and the wide shallow drawer with wrenches. They open and close very easily.
