Sedimentor and Tank Sender Unit 300 TDi

Hello all,

I’m replacing my sedimentor unit in the rear off the tank of my ‘96 300 TDi Defender.

Old and crusty and the plastic drain tab broke allowing air into the system. Field fix with 5 minute JB Weld packed in the hole got me back home from 75 miles away (in the snow). New sedimentor unit and new filter in engine bay ordered.

Now, I’m wondering if I should replace the sending unit in the tank?? Fuel Gauge works fine. The sending unit is nothing more than a “straw” to be drawn from, correct? The lift pump is doing all the work, correct? I’ve replaced the lift pump (using the three gasket trick) AND have a new injection pump as of last month, so everything else is in tip top shape!! On that end. So, new sending unit? Or, not worry too much about it (for now).

Thanks folks!

Not much to the sending unit and pickup. The pickup is a fixed straw to the bottom of the tank, usually a low spot. The sending unit is a float on the end of an arm connected to a variable resistor. If they work I wouldn't mess with them, except if I were dropping the tank for another reason (e.g. rust through). The only moving part is the sending unit float arm and they are generally very long lived.

I'd not touch it for now. Get the truck to a stable spot, running smooth as can be. add things to a service window if desired.

Unless there are issues at play, I usually bundle a new tank with a HD tank skid plate along with all the fixings. one and done type deal.

Thanks Michael that’s my thought too!
