safety ratings data on RRC, anyone have data?

I'd like to do some research on the safety comparison of a RRC vs some newer car (generic, fill in the blank). I know there's lots of advancements since 1995 but I really want to see some real research. I just cant see how putting my 15 year old into a newer'ish Toyota Corolla would be better than a RRC from an impact crash standpoint. Maybe I'm wrong...and that's what I'm looking for. Some real sound research on the crash stats.

Depends....

The speed of the crash and whether or not the air bags will actually work on the 1995 RRC is an issue. I'd say that in most crashes, they probably aren't much different. But some common head on crashes would be really bad in a RRC.

I have one that I'm going to be handing over to my son this summer. In reality, what are you going to do? Unless you are running harnesses and SD roll bars, and race safety gear, no matter what you drive, the worst can happen. I figure I'm going to train him, I'm even going to get him some flight training, get him trained, and hope that a "normal" crash is all he ever gets into, if any.

Also... on a little bit of a side note. I'm a high school teacher, and I've always thought it was funny that parents pay their kids to get good grades. But now I have my freshman son who is going to start driving this Summer, and it occurred to me that not only do I not want to pay 100% for his gas, insurance, and maintenance, but I want him to take responsibility for those things himself. In making him pay for part of it, I hope it will make him a more responsible driver. And I am going to start paying him for his good grades. The idea being that if he gets a 3.5 gpa or better, his insurance rate will go down drastically. The money I pay him for good grades will motivate him, give him some cash to spend on his car, and it will mean much deeper savings for myself when I pay the insurance!

Here is my research findings. Hit a Caddy that turned in front of me at a traffic light. I was going 45 at the time. Impact pushed the wheel to the driver side seat box. Rover totalled. I was able to open my door to get out without any problem. '94 so no air bag yet safety harness keep me in place so no injury. So yes more safe than a smaller car imho and accident data.

Safety harness or just the seat belt?

Safety harness or just the seat belt?

Just the standard RRC seat belt - always have called the restraint a safety harness as grew up with just the seat or lap belt.
