Roll Cage Bolts

One of the previous owners of my truck had stainless roll rage hardware installed. I've always heard that this is not safe. I also generally just hate stainless hardware because it never comes apart easily. Recently I noticed most of the bolt heads for my roll cage are cracked. Does anyone have any recommendations for replacements? The factory bolts look like seatbelt bolts.

Stainless 304 or 316 is a step above a Grade 2 fastener. In some cases it will be ok, but you might as well replace all of them and be safe. I can't offer advice on what to use, but McMaster-Carr is probably the best place to get exactly what you want.

I bought the same style SD cage about a year ago, it came with metric grade 8.8 zinc coated fasteners. My local True Value had the same exact ones (I needed a couple extra shorter ones). Same hardware for all external mountings (cross bar to A section, A section into fender braces etc).

I changed the regular bolts to stainless allen head like you have for the hoop section to fender, hoop to hoop and, hoop to roof connections. True Value had those in stock as well.

As per Safety Devices installation instructions they are M12x1.25 with a torque spec of 70NM.

Stainless graded torx head bolts for the SD cage are available from Nakatanenga.

Stainless replacement for ALR5549

Issue with the hex head bolts from SD is they sometimes start to strip when being torqued to the manufacturers spec.

Aren't the SD bolts torx?

Sorry, meant to say the "Allen Head bolts". (had hex head on the brain!) The SD kit comes with Allen Head bolts, (the style shown in AdamSnata85's second photo). In that position on top of the wing, and some other spots on the cage, there isn't room to fit a hex head bolt and socket.

It's the SS Allen Heads that have a tendency to sometimes round out when torquing to recommended settings.

Also be sure to use Nickel anti sieze paste on all SS fasteners to prevent galling or cold welding. The issue with pulling SS fasteners apart as mentioned by AdamSanta85 is probably from lack of doing just that.

Ah now I remember. The SD kit came with stainless allen for the cage feet to fender braces and front cage to roof. I had to get allen hardware for where the roof pipes meet the front cage. The rest of the hardware was just grade 8.8. They are all the same thread/pitch.
