Q: About Buying Direct From UK

I'm looking to buy a few items directly from the UK, things that are difficult to source here, especially for a good price. Even with shipping, I should save money.

But I've never bought directly from UK without actually being there myself. So are there any issues I should be aware of? Should I use cart, phone, or email?

Specifically, I am looking at this item from YRM:

Anyone know this company?

DNW is listed on their site as a retailer, but I didn't see anything on the DNW site when I was looking. YRM also suggests a place out of Atlanta that has an ebay store. The prices are absolutely ridiculous. For example, a Series 2/3 footwell for drivers side is 26GBP on YRM's site. The ebay store has it listed for $158. That is a stupid markup.

Those radiator mounts are $80, which is a little more reasonable.

I don't know if YRM would be willing to ship to the US for a small part, but a quick email might save you a lot.

YRM will sell direct to the US, but the shipping is huge. I've quoted out some stuff with them (granted this was over a year ago) and its like 2x the cost of the part just to get it here.

But, in general, ordering from the UK is fine I buy online from Craddock or Paddock a few times per year. Online cart, check out. Sometimes I need to approve with my bank card, and always have to pay shipping on a separate quote sent by someone from the company after I place the order.

Have never had an issue.

I found the parts to still be cheaper buying direct from YRM (including shipping) than sourcing in the US. Zero issues and I've bought several items...

I have purchased from LRdirect and Ashcroft, each in UK. No issues, fast shipment, and much cheaper than I could of gotten from any US distributer, that is including the shipping.

All good info.

The parts I want cost a total of about $25 US, but if I buy the same parts from RN, I have to pay something like $50 and $65 respectively!!! (Not including shipping!)

I'm hoping that a small package sent across the pond won't cost more than $90 to ship.

Another option would be to concentrate your purchases in one place. The key to the savings is to make bulk shipments.

I remember when I needed the same radiator brackets, I asked Andrew at Allisport (I think he owns the place) if he could do a couple of transactions in my behalf. He was happy to accommodate (at cost).

Give it a try, a lot of UK vendors are enthusiast and will go the extra mile for a fellow owner.

I have had good experience with LR Direct, particularly for Discovery 3 specific things that are avail in the US but a bit rarer and more costly. On the balance I've found I can get what I want, plus shipping, and still come in under what I'd get here if I'm deliberate about what choosing what I get from a US vs UK vendor.

Please for god sake ignore that shop in Atlanta. They went Chapter 11 some time ago causing a great deal of upset.

I bought direct from YRM. Fantastic product quality.

I bought a lot of parts from Steve Parker when I installed my 200Tdi, but had to wire my money into their bank account.

I recently emailed them about some more parts and got this reply:

"Today we are having talks with Paypal about global shipping so I am hoping next week you can order it on the website, pay by Paypal and they will ship it to you."

That would open up another great resource.

LRDirect is awesome.

My dentist highly recommends their engine mounts as a fight against loose filings.

Interesting, I believe I just bought a part off them on Ebay. It was a different username, but the photos are very similar to the store and it has the same manila tag. Wasn't my intention, but the price was good for a part I haven't seen in a while.

Which engine mounts?

I ordered a set of 200Tdi mounts after another member recommended ordering from Richard at Glencoyne Engineering. I never got the mounts. Richard sent me an email quite some time later apologizing, but I never got them. I did get a paypal refund though........
