For that matter, I wonder how much of the NAS D-90's 182 hp makes it to the pavement..
You must be talking about a 97. 14CUX IIRC was 175 - of which I suspect about 50 make it to the ground in my Blue Roof Classic.

I tow, with my 90 and 110, and I live at altitude and I go up higher when camping. I want to put one myth to bed and that is that Efans cool similar to mechanical and at highway speeds, fans don’t do anything at all. Now, I could never run cool with electric fans when towing with my 110 with ambient temps in the 90’s. Not at 80mph and not on hills (using a new R2.8 cummins, which admittedly runs hot). This is without a shroud on the fan as some people ship, with a shroud and with the most output shrouded version Efan on the market that I could find. and a new, vacuum filled cooling system. then I took out the Efan, put in mechanical (no shroud), and it did much better, but still got a little warm at speed/big hills…then I finally got my shroud built. Now it’s not even running a little hot in any scenario at all. Even at highway speeds when I was always told, fans did nothing. It’s just not true. It cooled more at highway speeds with shrouds, and a lot more, lot cooler. Like 205 versus 182. This is with same, untouched cooling system.

does it rob power? I’m sure it does, but I sure can’t feel the difference. too many Dyno tests out there to dispute it—so let’s just say it does. Worth it? Stupid question. I was running hot, now I’m not. Im super happy. But make no mistake—when you need it, mechanical pulls way more. I’m not the only one here to directly experience this too. Dkemm had similar results. I’m not saying I couldn’t oversize my cooling system to operate just fine with electric fans— I’m just saying when using mechanical, I don’t have to. My 200tdi with electric ran just fine with efans until I towed. I’m a special use case. Towing 2500lbs, steep passes, hot weather when camping at altitude.

Also good to remember you loose about 3% per 1000’ of elevation. So at 6000’, I’m sitting 18% less cooling to you low landers and that drops to 30% at passes or the mining trails up in Leadville. Then tow an off-road trailer up there. I’m back to mechanical and I’ll never leave again (on my Deefer).

Agreed on efans not cooling as well as mechanical driven ones. Had one in the ‘67 109 SW when ECR stuffed a 3.9 V8 in it. Not enough room for a mechanical fan. No shroud and of course the grill opening not all that large. Engine always ran on the warm side yet of course a blast to drive. Compared to the same engine in the ‘95 D90 that engine ran much cooler.
