How do I separate the green Piece from the red piece without ruinin any more of this rust bucket of a door?

that little spring clip pushes off, then you can pull out the mechanism

Also those clips can be a huge pain to re-fit, I would recommend getting them in place before you secure the handle to the door (I did all of mine and it was a huge project to get the new ones installed correctly)
