LR4 AC Compressor

My 2016 LR4 AC has stopped working. Blows hot air. Local shop has quoted $2k to replace the compressor.

Apparently the compressor is $1k. My first question, is there an aftermarket compressor I can use? And is it really $1k in labor?

Thanks,
Alex

I would recommend against supplying your own aftermarket parts. Most aftermarket parts are junk and the shop will not cover their labor if your supply the part should the new part fail. I would consider investigating the direct pressure sensing valve on the pressure. The labor is the same but the part is probably cheaper.

What is the direct pressure sensing valve?

It’s a valve on the compressor that is replaceable separately. There is a technical bulletin about it. If your shop is a Land Rover specialist, they should know about it.

The AC compressor failed on my LR3 (throwing the drive belt and causing the engine to overheat), and I paid under half of what you are being quoted to get the whole unit replaced including labor, but that was in 2014, and so is out of date.

From my vague memory of the engine bay arrangement, I don’t see how there could be 8 hours of labor ($125hr x 8= $1000) for the swap, but someone more knowledgeable can comment.
