LR3 No Start

Situation: LR3 No start; not even an attempt to turn over. All lights work, transmission fault listed on trip computer screen. Tried Microstart jumpbox with no effect. Ideas, taunts, pithy observations? By the way, we're at a cabin in the boonies so a jump from another car won't be happening for a while.

Have you checked the battery connections for corrosion? I'd remove, clean and tighten them back down. Is it securely in Park? Double check.

It's a canbus issue. Jimmy Kelly spent hours with me yesterday trading messages.

Jayzus! Wrong place and wrong time. Does that stuff stem from water ingress problems?

That's what I've heard. So far, we've found no evidence of water ingress. Geico Roadside is springing for the seventy-mile tow. Will advise what I learn.

Usually a module fails (lots of time water ingress) or one of the CAN bus wires shorts against the body at some point which takes down the whole network.

[hangs head in shame] It was a just a dead battery. My Microstart jump box is now relegated to charging phones and tablets.

I keep my NOCO box in the truck, but since I've never had the opportunity to test it, I also keep a set of standard jump cables for just that reason.

Glad it was an easy fix.

my LR3 was killed by the IID tool being left in - I don't think it allows it to really turn off...
anyway.. new Northstar battery on the way.
glad it was an easy fix

bringing this thread back up - this morning mine did the same thing, No start, HDC fault showed then went away (no codes for it, there was a parking brake and air suspension fault)
I jumped in the D90 today, so no crisis but really frustrating, since i just replaced the battery with a northstar AGM.
I have my old battery sitting on a charger so i'll try that when i get home if it wont start.

i'm done with land rovers (except the Defender)....

Very Frustrating. In the past month I've logged about 40hrs on highway trips (dropping kids off to college and a last minute summer trip). The LR4 has earned the family truckster badge for its ease of ride and handling. Not something I could've done easily in my 90 or a 110tdi. But then again with Defenders I don't worry about stranding me without a fair warning either.

Battery voltage issues (from the battery itself or poor quality connections) are by far the most common cause of electrical faults in these vehicles. However corrosion in the CAN bus, especially at the transfer case control module connector, is also a common culprit. The brake switch is also known to cause issues.

Came it started, ran it 20 minutes or so, turned it off... and then it struggles to start.
Voltage is 12.84 after sitting 5 minutes.

Swapped back to old battery, starts fine right now... possible bad battery?

Frustrating since the battery is 2 weeks old

Sometimes it is the simple things like the ground being loose too. While the connectors are clean, they can be fiddly.

I think i'm going to sell it... honestly its too tall for me to Dive out of. With the SYA kit it cant go into access mode and being 5.6" and diving double tanks primary (i'm a scuba instructor/cave diver) its not working out as well as i had hoped, basically lifting doubles into it sucks more than normal and i can't use it as a platform to gear up on. (that probably won't make sense to most people but its an issue for me since most cave sites don't have any facilities).

Awesome truck (armored, lifted, and locked), this was just a battery issue apparently (has started 10 times now with no issues). I'm going to call northstar tomorrow and get a replacement.

The ground on the engine block could be corroded. It is very common and can give the same symptoms as a bad battery or starter. Put one of your meter leads on the block and the other on the negative battery terminal. Measure the voltage when you try to crank it. If you are seeing much voltage you have a bad ground.
