LR Missed the Boat

Nope. It's too hard to make a vehicle meet safety and emissions regulations and have a solid body on frame design with solid axles front and rear. Jeep pickup is a myth. It's a fake.

Jeep will sell a boatload of them and JLR will still move along at a snails pace until 2019. Along the way they will sell more Evoques and Discovery Sports and be happy. They are making money like never before and now don't really care about the heritage of the brand. Pretty stuff for a more modern buyer. Yes, it does feature all wheel drive but today's buyers really don't care anymore since they will never travel off pavement.
The 2013 JK Unlimited I owned for a year was a solid truck and never once needed anything other than an oil change.

In the mean time, the Ford Ranger is looking like... dang... I have too many cars already.

Except for when it snows and they drive like they know what they are doing.

Yeah that's sweet, I'll give be it a year in production then prob move to a diesel version of the scrambler ... I've given up hope for the new defender.

I've been talking about this truck with friends. This is pretty much the only truck that would make me sell my Defender. I'll probably end up keeping the defender though and by this as my daily. I've been waiting a long time for a Jeep diesel in the US. I drove a crd Wrangler in Korea for a few weeks and absolutely loved it

Damn. It does look good. But I'm biased.

Why not build up a 130 with an LS or Cummins and have the best of both worlds?
Brand new with warranty for most will trump a Defender LS build. I would bet around $40K for the new Jeep to start with diesel would be a lot less than building a 130 with a LS. I'm not saying you couldn't spend a lot more on the Jeep and many will, but to start it's a better place to be here in the USA.
I also love my mileage with my tdi currently at 32MPG as way better choice than a gas engine even a modern one like the LS. The JK I owned got a solid 20+MPG so I think the diesel will give close to what I'm currently getting in my 25 year old truck. Hard to think it won't be a good option to explore.

Because it's not like you can get a loan for a grey market, early 1990s truck. The vast majority of people on the road today, don't actually own their vehicles.

....Some days, it would be so easy to just go to a dealer and finish the heartache by borrowing a new Jeep, or waiting for the new Ranger to come out....

I need to know how you people do this. I was happy to get 20.3 mpg on a highway trip, empty, with a tailwind.

Ah! I didn't think about that. I remember I leveraged off of a home equity loan 20 years ago when I bought my first Defender. If I were to do it all over again today I'd probably borrow off my 401K given the market is not likely to go materially north of where we're sitting today, plus the lack of any campaign promises coming to light anytime soon.
