Looking Inside 300Tdi

I finally got a minute to do something on the truck. I have a used vacuum pump that I'm swapping to see if the loud ticking will go away.

Here is the glimpse into the side of the block, just wondering if there's anything out of the ordinary here that I don't know what I'm looking at:

Also, four of the bolts were really very loose. I suppose there is a specific torque for these that might help stop the leaking?

Any tips for putting this back on? Seems like it could be difficult to get it on straight without bumping the gasket out of sorts.

Use thread sealant on the bolts to avoid leaks ,because they are through bolts.

Fresh gasket, favorite sealant on both sides. I use hondabond non drying on locations like this. It will also stick the gasket in place for assembly

Use split lock washers to keep them tight.i had the same issues on my 200 with the fuel pump plate. (Same location) I also ended up measuring and using longer bolts as mine were too short

Cam lobes look great ,no strange wear

25 NM torque.

I was actually just researching this very thing. I have an engine sitting on the stand I picked up a while back that has a slight tapping towards the back. I was going to pull the vacuum pump and start it up without it and see if that is the noise.

And, I personally don't use the gaskets on any of these types of parts. I use Great Stuff or Permatex. But, that's a personal choice. Nothing wrong if you like using the gaskets.

I don't think you can seal this without the gasket, the pump side has a "waffle" pattern surface to it.

The ticking I hear is very loud, probably the loudest thing on the truck. I know it is the pump because I took an old towel and wrapped it around the thing a few times, tucked it in tight, then while the engine was still cold did a drive down and up my hill, took the towel off, did the same thing -- night and day difference. It had to be the pump, or the cam shaft that connects with the pump. I will soon know for sure. ...that is, if I don't get so angry that I end up just selling the whole truck before I finish this experiment.

OK, finally some good news. It's a small piece, but I'll take it.

The used pump seems to have done the job. I can tell you why they leak at the block... sheesh, it took half an hour just to get one bolt started, even with the cam positioned as well as I could, by the time I got it all tightened down, I'm sure my Right Stuff sealant was past its prime. Well, the noise has gone away. Now all I have is a slight "sh-sh-sh-sh" during certain times while rolling. It used to be a loud "TICK-TICK-TICK" that was down right uncomfortable, and is a big reason ear plugs were worn above 55mph.
