Land Rover aftermarket parts.

I am new to the Land Rover owners adventure and am wondering about quality of aftermarket parts.
Im getting the impression that Britpart is a budget, lower quality part. Am I correct?
What about Bearmach?
Any other makers, other than Land Rover?

Maybe someone with some aftermarket experience can post a list of makers/suppliers and rate them 1-10. 1-being poor, 10-being best.

Thanks.

Britpart=Shitpart ha ha ha

In all seriousness, I've used all kinds of parts since 2000.

You know, Genuine parts are just built by the lowest bidder, right?
So why are they any better than Britpart?

But, for some repairs, you will get recommendations to only use this or that brand of part.

Let us know if you have a specific part in mind.

Tolerances on Genuine Parts are much lower than non Genuine. Some OEM parts are ones that LR refused for Genuine, due to not being in tolerance. They get re-branded and put in different boxes, then sold as OEM.

Britpart has been busy stepping up their game. They are distributors for Global Roamer (overdrives) Safety Devices, ARB, Ashcroft & Polybush. Plus a fair amount of crappy stuff too! You just need to do your homework.

It is hit or miss in my experience. I usually try to buy genuine unless the part is outrageously expensive. For example, a Genuine water pump is $500 and an aftermarket is $100, I'll stick with Genuine. Bushings I would only go with Genuine. I have had horrible luck with aftermarket alternators and fuel pumps. I've had horrible luck with Genuine steering boxes.

If you are unsure, just ask here or one of the parts guys. I like dealing with Zack at Rovers North, Eric at Atlantic British, and Erik at Lucky 8. They can point you in the right direction.

Genuine Lucas parts have tormented Land Rover owners for decades.

The one and only Lucas part I have ordered (transfer case diff lock light switch) came with a crummy solder on the connector which broke as soon as it came out of the box.

I do it on a case by case basis. My preference goes for reputable aftermarket brand (Lemforder, Bosch, Delphi, Bilstein, SuperPro, VDO) or Britpart 'OEM' first, unless Genuine is only a few dollars more. (Ex: 200TDI radiator, $913 OEM vs $138 Bearmach). From there I go for Bearmach, and if not available Britpart. Sometimes the Bearmach stuff is identical to the Britpart, sometimes its nicer. Bearmach and Britpart also carry other brands too. You need to download their catalogues then use the part number in your suppliers system. For instance I got my Mantec tire carrier via Bearmach. Bearmach carries Exmoor, ARB etc.

Always google the part number you are ordering before ordering. Sometimes it will turn up valuable info relating specifically to that part and/or manufacturer. Save time, aggravation, and money.

I usually check the part number against 4 sites and go for the best deal.

Britpart A/C system kits are made by Cool Air Logan

I posted a picture last fall (on that other site) of a genuine tdi valve cover gasket that wasn't close to fitting on a tdi valve cover. No amount of heating, stretching, gluing could get the part to fit. In my opinion genuine often leaves a lot to be desired. Sad state of affairs when you can't pay up for a quality part for these trucks.

Been going with a lot of Bearmach stuff lately. Seems to be good so far.

For seals, I try to only get Corteco. For bearings, Timken.

Good thread. We should keep updating with "deals" as well. PSA etc. Also curious to hear when folks are getting good deals with exchange rates etc.
