is this a dumb idea?

without getting into a ton of background, we're talking about shipping the d90 out west somewhere, Denver, Salt Lake, or Phoenix... we have some friends out there or we'd find a storage place...

The idea is that we want to spend some time exploring the four corner states and it would be easier to do if we had a car already out there, already loaded with our hiking and camping gear.

This is all talk right now. I just wanted a sounding board.

One of the guys at work has done that a cpl times with his VW bus. I think he shipped it out, then drove it back. He said it worked out really well. You just have to find a reputable transporter.

Hmm Salt Lake is a Delta hub. Don't know why it wouldn't work if you make the appropriate arrangements. I know GBR services some vehicles that are kept out here at second residences. I don't think it is a bad idea. Hell if I had the room I would keep an eye on it for you. But I am space challenged currently. Good luck. Andrew

I would do it in a heartbeat. It's one thing to travel, it's something special to travel in your own vehicle. If you don't mind the miles being added I have heard of people hiring a driver to take cars across the country. My uncle had a pickup, 18ft enclosed trailer, and antique car transported from Oregon to New Hampshire that way.

I did this. Drove out to Colorado, wheeled for a week, put the truck in a storage unit in Grand Junction CO for a month (flew home). Flew back to GJ picked up the truck, wheeled Moab for a week. Then drove back home... I would have left it out there longer if I could have.

Highly recommend GJ. Central to all the best four wheeling and a decent enough airport. The storage unit I used was about $80 per month and only about 15 mins from the airport in a taxi.

I think it's a great idea. Why not? If you have the means, do it.

I might question how long it would be sitting between trips.

You've been talking with Max too much. As others have said, if you have someone to drive it every once in awhile that would be ideal

I would lean towards driving it out and shipping it back. Shipping companies are notorious for delays, so it would suck to have your truck in transit when you are planning on being out there.

My fianc?e and I are doing this for our honeymoon. I'm going to drive to CO where she will meet meet. We will then spend two weeks and drive to Ca. From there, we will ship the truck back. We don't need our vehicle since we live in NYC, so shipping delays aren't a problem.

Pretty much.

If I can get off my dead duff, get this 4Runner sold, procure the other 4Runner and get it sorted out, I'm going to do it...

My buddy did the same thing with his Toyota from Long Island.

Great idea and let me know when you guys will be passing thru PHX. I have an awesome shipper that is willing to work with clients regarding a loaded up truck. Most multi car haulers want the vehicles empty for weight and liability issues.

I have a friend that has his D90 in California now and might want to try to get a package deal with the two of us shipping the trucks back. Both of us would be flexible on timeline and drop-off location (anywhere from Va to NY).
