How to change the transmission for freeways?

don't be afraid to wring it out in "screaming mode". the rev limiter is 5200rpm. you can safely use everything under that.

but, i'll echo the above statements that with the mileage it has, the timing chain is probably stretched and the cam lobes are probably half worn off so you are working with maybe 150hp instead of 188.

i forgot to mention, most all automatic defenders/discovery 1s/range rover classics have the kickdown cable adjusted to be supremely lazy, meaning you have to floor it to get any kind of downshift. they drive far better if the kickdown cable is adjusted to be pretty much as tight as it will go (be careful though as it can break if too tight). you can then get kind of a half-throttle downshift which allows the engine to be in its best rpm range a little more easily.

Convinced Defender owners have to give in and learn to enjoy the RH lane at 55 sometimes.

There are max speed stickers out there for us.....

and sometimes they're right on your windshield. (in the 2.5NA Tith)

Usually done due to off road usage.

I always thought the low range gear was the same stock ratio(3.2) for all LT230?s? Why would one change an LT230 for off road usage? Unless you were talking about diff gears?

You change high range gearing in the TC to a lower number to compensate for a change in the differential gearing from stock of 3.54 to either 3.8 or 4.1. Changing tire size also affects the effective gear ratios.

Ashcroft's website lets you play with all the variables and see the effect they make.

Thanks everyone for the inputs. I was thinking of having the engine redone given how much I spent on everything else so I'll get it in for the timing chain and cam inspection and change if necessary. The car was never off road so I doubt the TC was changed.

Screw that.

x2 My limiting factor now is that I have 4:11 gears which puts the speedo (and fuel injection ecu speed signal) off. The fuel injectors cut off when my speedo reads 94 which I think is under 80 mph. I definitely hit 90 several times without effort before I switched the gears.

The speed was limited to the speed rating of the tires. That is typically how it is always done. I was going to correct Adam that it was 88mph, but I think that was entirely due to my fascination of Back to the Future. I believe the original rating was an L rating (the NAS came briefly with mud terrains the switched to AT) and L was 75mph. I’m not hanging my hat on all that, but I think that was what it all was.

Switch out the speedo gear and problem solved. I?m running 4:11s with 255s and I?m only reading a few mph high at highway speed. I think it?s the 23tooth (yellow?) disco gear. I still may have the part number if you need it.

Yeah that'd be great if you have it. When I get around to doing the Tdi swap I will put in an electric sender and new speedometer. For now replacing the gear would be good.
