Been looking for a heavy duty radiator for my 1994 RHD DEFENDER 90. I did find the one from Rovers North for $439. i also did find one from CHR Racing but not sure of the quality. Has anyone heard of them are the lagit? The price is what makes me suspicious $241. Any iJust got out will help.

Allisport for increased cooling, or Ron Davis. Copper for longevity. I have a RD in my 90 and Alli in my 110.

Just email them. They have a bunch that fit defenders with or without oil coolers, trans coolers, and electric fans. I use them in all of the V8 trucks I build with an LS or RV8.

Just fyi they can be slow to respond but will eventually. They always seem to have a backlog but they do quote accurate times for when your radiator will be ready. Usually takes 6-8 weeks for one to be ready. I just got one yesterday and two more coming next week.

If you don’t mind what is price range for radiator?

I went with the rovers north HD radiator because I wanted OE look. Didn't want aluminum due to fear of it getting damaged somehow due to vibrations. Idk who this other dude is, but seems like he has a lot of good reviews..

Nothing against Ron Davis, it's a great radiator, just overkill for a Tdi. They run cool in general, no need for a $1k radiator. I've had great luck with the normal ones, and the HD ones we sell are all metal which is a nice upgrade and half the price

edit - just to add on, I wouldn't have any opposition to a Ron Davis radiator for an R2.8, LS, or V8

Thanks for all the input guys was very helpful. I think I'll go with the Rovers North heavy duty. I'm a 1st time Defender owner and have had it now for about 2 years. It seams to run hot when I put a strain on the engine, but sitting in LA traffic for half an hour did nothing to it. I'll start with the radiator and go from there.

Rovers North stands behind their products and has supported local clubs and US based forums for a long time. If they sell what I am looking for I buy it from them. Hell, I even get my maple syrup from them!

To me, it depends. And you low living, sea dwelling creatures be damned! (I used to be one…). But now I live at altitude amongst big F N hills like I70 going over multiple passes for miles, and I’m towing 2000lbs riding on 33’s. It’s how I want to be, that’s a choice. Maybe not 65, but at least 50 mph. For miles. Up steep hills. with temp in the 90’s cause that has been all damn summer. 24% less cooling, just in the Hills like Breck! But I’ve been running electric fans. And AC. It’s near impossible In these 98F days, like today while towing. Been that way with LS, R2.8, 200 tdi, 4.6, 3.9, 4.0 …And screw electric fans for these conditions. I’m going back to mechanical. Other shit can’t keep up and mechanical is the path for me. 10,000‘ passes with todays speeds (even close), requires it. I’m working on mechanical shroud now For the cummins. for this, max cooling and that is aluminum.

Now, transport me to a 90 at sea level not planning to tow a trailer—like in CA or Mississippi (low elevation) different story even at 100F ambient.. I’d take copper for longevity, and have done just that. Would do it again. Solid choice. It’s only when you’re squeaking for cooling, but ya know what? End results the same. Good for then engine. Good cooling, good thermostat. Engine runs in design range. Simple as that for max reliability.

I maybe exception, but I just pulled my Alisport radiator bc it started leaking at the end caps. Since it’s aluminum, no local shop will work on it. So, 3yrs in, it’ll likely go to recycling. :(
I just had a local shop added another core to the LR factory radiator (same capacity as Alisport) and since it’s copper, any competent radiator shop can work on it, unlike aluminum unit. The cost was under 700 (SF Bay Area premium), which is less than cost of Alisport & RD (about 2x).

I’ve heard of several Allisport leaking over the years. Not many, but definitely. RD also has great instructions on checking for electrolysis by measuring voltage across the fluid— which can accelerate any corrosion. It’s a thing, big enough that they have instructions for it. Copper is definitely the most durable and easiest to repair without a doubt and on stock setup, the way to go.
