I’ve never heard of a State being so serious about lights! It’d be fun to stick on a yellow cover or take correct theatrical gel and just see what it is like. Is there any benefit while driving?

I guess I just like the yellow light, especially in the rain/fog. Technically its not as bright, but more usable I guess?

In Virginia auxiliary lights have to be covered and are not allowed to be used on the road. As part of the state inspection, it the lights are fitted (also covered) the lights have to function. So if your roof lights that are illegal to use on the road have a bulb out you fail state inspection.

Same in VT, any light above the hood needs covers, and any light on the vehicle needs to function.
