First Road Trip

Taking Landy on her first road trip Thursday. I have to go to Wenatchee Washington for some training and thought I would try driving the Rover over.
Its about a 230 mile one way trip. Wish me luck.

First time out of town with the rig. I have had it since Aug of last year and since then, replaced a transmission, clutch, timing belt, injectors, fuel tank, and lots of other stuff. Should be interesting.

Any suggestions?

Noise canceling earphones. Throw an extra quart of oil in the back. Gloves and clothes to change into if needed to work on her (or a jumpsuit). The Rubber Nitrile gloves is what I like.

Also charge your cell phone, etc before you leave.

Clean the windows and put Rain-X on the front windshield.

Oh, and enjoy!

Make sure your stereo connects to your iphone, so you have a good play list, and crank that music up!

The other day i did a 450 mile round trip in my Defender 200tdi towing a trailer. Effortless no problems. Secret is don't be in a hurry, if you motor along at about 65mph you wont get deafened, your fuel economy will be great, and you'll have a stress free trip with much less chance of any mechanical break downs.

before you leave grease your prop shafts, check all your fluid levels including clutch and brake reservoirs, oil, radiator, gearbox and axles. Also check your tire pressures, this is often overlooked.

Oh and make sure you've got correct air in your tires and air in the spare. It is extremely embarrassing when a tire change becomes a debacle.

Always carry a roll of silicone tape (x-treme tape) to fix any burst hoses.

Make it to Wenatchee ok.
Had a fun trip so far, no major problems. Did find out that I can't fill my new fuel tank totally full, it is leaking around the level sending unit. No bigeye, I just won't fill it full on this trip.
Getting about 23mpg, and able to cruise at 60 mph most of the time.

rovercolarado, I did make a stop at Icicle Brewing Co. Had a nice lunch and a Dirty Face Amber. Thanks for the tip.

Wenatchee and Leavenworth has lots of great local eateries, breweries and wineries. I can recommend many local spots. If you want to get away from the big city it has a lot to offer for an extended weekend trip.

Well the return trip didn't go as smooth.
After leaving Wenatchee Sunday morning and going over Steven's Pass the fan/water pump belt failed.

I had broken down in a area with no cell service

I tried repairing the belt with duct tape that didn't work well. Next I made a belt out of zip-ties. I couldn't get it tight enough to efficiently spin the water pump.
I McGivered a belt using para cord. That looked like it would work for a little while. I packed up with the intent on making it to cell service and call AAA.
Then the started would not engage. After some trouble shooting it appeared that the starter solenoid was not getting the voltage signal from the ignition switch. I rigged up a jumper using parts of a wire harness from a portable air compressor.
I got it started and was able to make it an area of cell service before the para belt started slipping and the engine water temp started to rise.

I got a tow into Monroe and was dropped off at a auto parts store.
I found a Gates belt that worked well, rigged up a remote started switch. Make the rest of the trip home uneventfully.

I enjoyed the challenge of the situation. If I had carried an extra belt, would of been no big deal. I didn't conceder the belts because I had replaced them not long ago. The belt that failed was a Britpart made in PRC. So I think just poor quality.

As for the starter, I haven't looked into it and won't be able for several week. The remote started is working ok for now. If it does turn out to be a bad ignition switch I think I will install a push button start. Whats you opinion on that?

Over all, the rig traveled well, comfortable, and I like the upright perspective of the taller rig. Looking forward to more adventures.

Hell yeah! That's the spirit.

With each situation like this, you learn a little more about your truck and how to build an effective spares box. Nice work!

Sounds like you have some serious roadside fun. Nothing better than trail repairs to learn your vehicle even better.
I wouldn't have carried a spare belt either if I had just purchased one. Looks like I'll avoid Britpart belts in the future since other choices are available.
Glad you made it home safe!
